Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing

Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing Lowest new price: $23.00
Lowest used price: $37.04
List price: $50.00
Author: Alona Pardo

This book presents Dorothea Lange's inspiring and influential photographs, which brought the plight of 20th-century America's poor and disenfranchised into the public eye.

Dorothea Lange's photograph, Migrant Mother, is one of the most indelible and recognizable images of the Dust Bowl era. Lange's career stretched far beyond the Great Depression, driven throughout by her compassionate advocacy for the people and land of California. This riveting book opens with Lange's Bay Area portraits of the 1920s and '30s when her photo studio formed a hub for San Francisco's bohemian and artistic elite. It offers a generous overview of her work with the Farm Security Administration, where Lange was the only female photographer documenting the impact of the Depression and Dust Bowl on the west coast, working alongside the likes of Walker Evans, as well as her pictures of Japanese Americans forcibly displaced into internment camps following Pearl Harbor. It also includes images from her wartime shipyards series with Ansel Adams, postwar projects on the injustices of the American court system, loss of a community through the damming of the Putah Creek, and a photo series on Ireland. Accompanying these superbly reproduced images are thoughtful essays by curator Drew Johnson, critic Abigail Solomon-Godeau, and writer and curator David Campany, which offer appreciations of Lange's work as an artist and humanitarian, charting the legacy of her exceptional photographic oeuvre.

Ansel Adams in Yosemite Valley: Celebrating the Park at 150 Lowest new price: $61.65
Lowest used price: $50.00
List price: $100.00
Author: Peter Galassi

A deluxe, oversized book timed for the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's signing of the Yosemite Grant, an event that laid the groundwork for the National Parks system.

Ansel Adams first visited Yosemite in 1916, at the age of fourteen, and returned every year throughout his life. It was in Yosemite that he fell in love with Western wilderness and became a photographer; he made more photographs at Yosemite than at any other place.

Roughly 150 breathtaking images are exquisitely reproduced in this large-format clothbound book. There are notable portraits of El Captain (the famous rock face whose Dawn Wall was recently free-climbed for the first time), Half Dome, Cathedral Rocks, Royal Arches, and other distinctive rock formations that frame the valley; grand views in all seasons and all states of weather; intimate details of nature from the Valley floor; the waterfalls--Bridaveil, Yosemite, Vernal, Nevada; studies of trees, from the giants of the Mariposa Grove to the exquisite white blossoms of the dogwood. There are gathering and clearing storms, snow and ice, bright sunshine, and the subtle shades of dawn and dusk.

The photographs have been selected and sequenced by Peter Galassi, former Chief Curator of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. His abundantly illustrated introduction sets Adams's pictures within the rich history of imagery of Yosemite.

Group f.64: Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and the Community of Artists Who Revolutionized American Photography

Group f.64: Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and the Community of Artists Who Revolutionized American Photography Lowest new price: $20.94
Lowest used price: $5.61
List price: $35.00
Author: Mary Street Alinder

Group f.64 is perhaps the most famous movement in the history of photography, counting among its members Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Willard Van Dyke, and Edward Weston. Revolutionary in their day, Group f.64 was one of the first modern art movements equally defined by women. From the San Francisco Bay Area, its influence extended internationally, contributing significantly to the recognition of photography as a fine art.

The group-first identified as such in a 1932 exhibition-was comprised of strongly individualist artists, brought together by a common philosophy, and held together in a tangle of dynamic relationships. They shared a conviction that photography must emphasize its unique capabilities-those that distinguished it from other arts-in order to establish the medium's identity. Their name, f.64, they took from a very small lens aperture used with their large format cameras, a pinprick that allowed them to capture the greatest possible depth of field in their lustrous, sharply detailed prints. In today's digital world, these “straight” photography champions are increasingly revered.

Mary Alinder is uniquely positioned to write this first group biography. A former assistant to Ansel Adams, she knew most of the artists featured. Just as importantly, she understands the art. Featuring fifty photographs by and of its members, Group f.64 details a transformative period in art with narrative flair.

A celebration of California by its most renowned photographer, this book features many rarely seen images and an intriguing selection of writings about the state by classic and contemporary authors. This volume collects for the first time a full range of Adams' California images. Sixty-five beautifully reproduced photographs capture some of California's most inimitable vistas - San Francisco, the Golden Gate, Point Reyes, the North Coast, redwood forests, Mt. Lassen, orchards in Santa Clara, Lake Tahoe, lettuce fields in the Salinas Valley, and the gold country, among many others. Accompanying these beautiful photographs are evocative poems, essays, and passages about California by a wide range of notable writers, including Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, John Muir, Robinson Jeffers, John Steinbeck, John McPhee, Wallace Stegner, and Joan Didion.

Ansel Adams may be one of the most famous nature photographers ever, but his often-overlooked portraits of people and images of buildings and manmade landscapes are as stirring and beautiful as his inimitable wilderness photographs. This is a manageably sized volume that collects images of the state's beaches, mountains, parks, architecture, and people, as well as writing--poems, essays, fiction--by authors such as John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walt Whitman, and Joan Didion. The combination of words and images is a visual and literary homage to California, a place that was home to and the source of inspiration for the great photographer.
