By ShihI. Pai. ISBN 0442200757. From the front flap: "With both the microscopic and the macroscopic approaches, the author discussec all the basic properties of fluids from a wide range of speeds, temperature, and environments. He considers many important interactions of fluid flow with other physical phenomena such as chemical reaction, electromagnetic field, and radiative transfer. He also treats many fluid flows in which the classical concepts of fluid mechanicc are not valid such as rarefied gasdynamics, nonNewtonian fluid, twophase flows, relativistic fluid mechanics, Gaussian fluid mechanics, and biofluid mechanics."

Simulating Combustion: Simulation of combustion and pollutant formation for enginedevelopment

Author: Günter P. Merker

The numerical simulation of combustion processes in internal combustion engines, including also the formation of pollutants, has become increasingly important in the recent years, and today the simulation of those processes has already become an indispensable tool when veloping new combustion concepts. While pure thermodynamic models are wellestablished tools that are in use for the simulation of the transient behavior of complex systems for a long time, the phenomenological models have become more important in the recent years and have also been implemented in these simulation programs. In contrast to this, the thr dimensional simulation of incylinder combustion, i. e. the detailed, integrated and continuous simulation of the process chain injection, mixture formation, ignition, heat release due to combustion and formation of pollutants, has been significantly improved, but there is still a number of challenging problems to solve, regarding for example the exact description of s processes like the structure of turbulence during combustion as well as the appropriate choice of the numerical grid. While chapter 2 includes a short introduction of functionality and operating modes of internal combustion engines, the basics of kinetic reactions are presented in chapter 3. In chapter 4 the physical and chemical processes taking place in the combustion chamber are described. Ch ter 5 is about phenomenological multizone models, and in chapter 6 the formation of poll ants is described.

The most frequently used method for the numerical integration of parabolic differential equa tions is the method of lines, where one first uses a discretization of space derivatives by finite differences or finite elements and then uses some timestepping method for the the solution of resulting system of ordinary differential equations. Such methods are, at least conceptually, easy to perform. However, they can be expensive if steep gradients occur in the solution, stability must be controlled, and the global error control can be troublesome. This paper considers a simultaneaus discretization of space and time variables for a onedimensional parabolic equation on a relatively long time interval, called 'timeslab'. The discretization is repeated or adjusted for following 'timeslabs' using continuous finite element approximations. In such a method we utilize the efficiency of finite elements by choosing a finite element mesh in the timespace domain where the finite element mesh has been adjusted to steep gradients of the solution both with respect to the space and the time variables. In this way we solve all the difficulties with the classical approach since stability, discretization error estimates and global error control are automatically satisfied. Such a method has been discussed previously in [3] and [4]. The related boundary value techniques or global time integration for systems of ordinary differential equations have been discussed in several papers, see [12] and the references quoted therein.

Although nonlinear waves occur in nearly all branches of physics and engi neering, there is an amazing degree of agreement about the fundamental con cepts and the basic paradigms. The underlying unity of the theory for linearized waves is already wellestablished, with the importance of such universal concepts as group velocity and wave superposition. For nonlinear waves the last few decades have seen the emergence of analogous unifying comcepts. The pervasiveness of the soliton concept is amply demonstrated by the ubiquity of such models as the Kortewegde Vries equation and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Similarly, there is a universality in the study of wavewave interactions, whether determin istic or statistical, and in the recent developments in the theory of wavemean flow interactions. The aim of this text is to present the basic paradigms of weakly nonlinear waves in fluids. This book is the outcome of a CISM Summer School held at Udine from September 2024, 2004. . Like the lectures given there the text covers asymptotic methods for the derivation of canonical evolution equations, such as the Kortew de Vries and nonlinear Schrodinger equations, descriptions of the basic solution sets of these evolution equations, and the most relevant and compelling applica tions. These themes are interlocked, and this will be demonstrated throughout the text . The topics address any fluid flow application, but there is a bias towards geophysical fluid dynamics, reflecting for the most part the areas where many applications have been found.

Author: Andreas N. Alexandrou

This book provides a comprehensive and wideranging introduction to fluid mechanics, assuming only a basic knowledge of calculus and physics. Introduces fluid mechanics within the context of a broad range of topics and disciplines by combining elements and concepts from different disciplines as is often found in solutions to engineering problems. The book integrates a discussion of fluid flow phenomena with that of other subjects, such as Solid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, and others. It also includes discussions of other fields of specialization often used to solve engineering problems, such as chemistry, biology, economics, sociology, and others. And, it integrates the use of computers and modern experimental techniques. The first edition of Introduction to Fluid Mechanics provides a unique thematic organization and divides the material into three sections: Theory. This section is divided into four categories: Introduction, Conservation Laws, Fluid Kinematics, and Fluid Dynamics. Analysis. In this section, procedures such as Dimensionless Analysis, Analytics, Experimental and Numerical Solutions are introduced and applied to fundamental problems. Special Topics. Topics such as ideal, invisicid flow, compressible flow, and dynamics of rotating fluids are reserved for separate chapters. The book also introduces ideas from computational and experimental fluid mechanics. An essential reference for all engineering professionals.

ELEMENTARY FLUID MECHANICS BY JOHN K. VENNARD Assistant Professor of Fluid Mechanics New York University NEW YORK JOHN WILEY SONS, INC. LONDON CHAPMAN HALL, LIMITED 1940 COPYRIGHT, 1940, BY JOHN K. VENNARD All Rights Reserved This book or any part thereof must not be reproduced in any form without the written permission of the publisher. PRINTED IN U. S. A. PRESS OP BRAONWORTH A CO.. INC. BRIDGEPORT. CONN. ELEMENTARY FLUID MECHANICS PREFACE Fluid mechanics is the study under all possible conditions of rest and motion. Its approaches analytical, rational, and mathematical rather than empirical it concerns itself with those basic principles which lead to the solution of numerous diversified problems, and it seeks results which are widely applicable to similar fluid situations and not limited to isolated special cases. Fluid mechanics recognizes no arbitrary boundaries between fields of engineering knowledge but attempts to solve all fluid problems, irrespective of their occurrence or of the characteristics of the fluids involved. This textbook is intended primarily for the beginner who knows the principles of mathematics and mechanics but has had no previous experience with fluid phenomena. The abilities of the average beginner and the tremendous scope of fluid mechanics appear to be in conflict, and the former obviously determine limits beyond which it is not feasible to go these practical limits represent the boundaries of the subject which I have chosen to call elementary fluid mechanics. The apparent conflict between scope of subject and beginner f s ability is only along mathematical lines, however, and the physical ideas of fluid mechanics are well within the reach of the beginner in the field. Holding to the belief that physical concepts are the sine qua non of mechanics, I have sacrificed mathematical rigor and detail in developing physical pictures and in many cases have stated general laws only without numerous exceptions and limitations in order to convey basic ideas such oversimplification is necessary in introducing a new subject to the beginner. Like other courses in mechanics, fluid mechanics must include disciplinary features as well as factual information the beginner must follow theoretical developments, develop imagination in visualizing physical phenomena, and be forced to think his way through problems of theory and application. The text attempts to attain these objectives in the following ways omission of subsidiary conclusions is designed to encourage the student to come to some conclusions by himself application of bare principles to specific problems should develop ingenuity illustrative problems are included to assist in overcoming numerical difficulties and many numerical problems for vi PREFACE the student to solve are intended not only to develop ingenuity but to show practical applications as well. Presentation of the subject begins with a discussion of fundamentals, physical properties and fluid statics. Frictionless flow is then discussed to bring out the applications of the principles of conservation of mass and energy, and of impulsemomentum law, to fluid motion. The principles of similarity and dimensional analysis are next taken up so that these principles may be used as tools in later developments. Frictional processes are discussed in a semiquantitative fashion, and the text proceeds to pipe and openchannel flow. A chapter is devoted to the principles and apparatus for fluid measurements, and the text ends with an elementary treatment of flow about immersed objects...
