Problems on Algorithms

Problems on Algorithms Lowest new price: $43.52
Lowest used price: $36.05
List price: $18.40
Author: Ian Parberry

With approximately 600 problems and 35 worked examples, this supplement provides a collection of practical problems on the design, analysis and verification of algorithms. The book focuses on the important areas of algorithm design and analysis: background material; algorithm design techniques; advanced data structures and NP-completeness; and miscellaneous problems. Algorithms are expressed in Pascal-like pseudocode supported by figures, diagrams, hints, solutions, and comments.

Understanding FFT Applications, Second Edition

Understanding FFT Applications, Second Edition Lowest new price: $34.95
Lowest used price: $71.74
List price: $34.95
Author: Anders E. Zonst

This companion volume to Andy Zonst's Understanding the FFT is written in five parts, covering a range of topics from transient circuit analysis to two dimensional transforms. It's an introducton to some of the many applicatons of the FFT, and it's intended for anyone who wants to understand and explore this technology.

The presentation is unique in that it avoids the calculus almost (but not quite) completely. It's a practical "how-to" book, but it also provides down to earth understanding.

This book developes computer programs in BASIC and the reader is encouraged to type these into a computer and run them; however, for those who don't have access to a BASIC compiler you may down load the programs from the internet (contact Citrus Press for URL).

The potential buyer should understand that presentations are frequently started at an elementary level. This is just a technique to establish the foundation for the subsequent discussion, intended for those who don't already understand the subject (the material usually comes quickly to the problem at hand). The book is written in an informal, tutorial style, and should be managable by anyone with a solid background in high school algebra, trigonometry, and complex arithmetic. Zonst has included the mathematics that might not be available in a high-school curriculum; so, if you managed to work your way through the first book, you should be able to handle this one.

For those familiar with the first edition of this book, the most prominant feature of this revised edition will be its improved coherence and readability.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” goes the ancient saying. This concept is at the root of the computational worldview, which basically says that very complex systems—the world we live in—have their beginnings in simple mathematical equations.

We’ve lately come to understand that such an algorithm is only the start of a never-ending story — the real action occurs in the unfolding consequences of the rules. The chip-in-a-box computers so popular in our time have acted as a kind of microscope, letting us see into the secret machinery of the world. In Lifebox, the Seashell, and the Soul, Rucker — known as the father of cyberpunk — uses whimsical drawings, fables, and humor to demonstrate that everything is a computation — that thoughts, computations, and physical processes are all the same. Rucker discusses the linguistic and computational advances that make this kind of "digital philosophy" possible, and explains how, like every great new principle, the computational worldview contains the seeds of a next step.

Introduction to the Theory of Error-Correcting Codes (Wiley Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics)

Introduction to the Theory of Error-Correcting Codes (Wiley Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics) Lowest new price: $148.71
Lowest used price: $30.00
List price: $74.95
Author: Vera Pless

An introduction to the theory of error-correction codes, and in particular to linear block codes is provided in this book. It considers such codes as Hamming codes and Golay codes, correction of double errors, use of finite fields, cyclic codes, BCH codes and weight distributions, as well as design of codes. In this second edition, the author includes more material on non-binary code and cyclic codes. In addition some proofs have been simplified and there are many more examples and problems. The text has been aimed at mathematicians, electrical engineers and computer scientists.

The Theory of Computation (Harper & Row Computer Science and Technology Series)

The Theory of Computation (Harper & Row Computer Science and Technology Series) Lowest new price: $72.75
Lowest used price: $3.87
Author: Derrick Wood

Presents easily accessible coverage of language theory, concentrating on the major properties of the fundamental and automata models for languages. Focuses on practical applications such as finite automata and pattern matching, regular expressions and text editing, extended context-free grammars, and syntax diagrams. Simple and elegant proofs are given for theorems usually considered difficult (e.g., Parikh's theorem or the proof that every finite automata has an equivalent regular expression). Provides algorithms in a Pascal-like notation which complement discussions of constructions and programming. Each chapter includes a springboard section introducing topics for further investigation. Also provides short exercises and programming projects plus extensive examples.
