Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss

Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss Lowest new price: $4.56
Lowest used price: $0.10
List price: $17.00
Author: Mark Hyman
Brand: Atria Books

Bestselling author, columnist, and physician Mark Hyman, M.D., brings us a science-based, easy-to-follow diet and nutritional plan in UltraMetabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss.

For many, losing weight is a never-ending struggle, especially since our bodies are designed to keep weight on at all costs; it's a matter of survival. But a medical revolution is under way, showing us how to work with our bodies instead of against them to improve nutrition and ignite the natural fat-burning furnaces that lie dormant within us.

Drawing on cutting-edge research about nutrigenomics—the science of how food talks to our genes—Dr. Hyman, author of bestsellers including The Blood Sugar Solution, The Ultra-Mind Solution, UltraPrevention, and The UltraSimple Diet has created a method for losing weight by eating the right foods to detox and manage food allergies.

Food contains information and instructions for our bodies: eat the right foods and send instructions of weight loss and health; eat the wrong foods and send messages of weight gain and disease. After spending the last ten years conducting pioneering, hands-on research with over two thousand patients at Canyon Ranch, one of the world's leading health resorts, Dr. Hyman has discovered the seven fundamental causes of obesity. He has integrated his years of research into this groundbreaking approach to help you rebalance and stabilize your metabolism to maintain weight loss and enjoy lifelong health.

This isn’t a fad diet. Dr. Hyman explains how to customize your personal health and weight-loss program with a streamlined eight-week plan designed to help you lose weight based on your own unique genetic needs. Menus, recipes, and shopping lists, as well as recommendations for vitamins, supplements, and exercise will help you change your lifestyle and be healthy for years to come.

Fat : Fighting the Obesity Epidemic

Fat : Fighting the Obesity Epidemic Lowest new price: $2.50
Lowest used price: $3.64
List price: $50.00
Author: Robert Pool

When the leptin gene was discovered in 1994, news articles predicted that there might soon be an easy, pharmaceutical solution to the growing public health crisis of obesity. Yet this scientific breakthrough merely proved once again how difficult the fight against fat really is. Despite the many appetite-suppressants, diet pills, and weight-loss programs available today, approximately 30 percent of Americans are obese. And that number is expanding rapidly.
Fat is the engaging story of the scientific quest to understand and control body weight. Covering the entire twentieth century, Robert Pool chronicles the evolving blame-game for fat--from being a result of undisciplined behavior to subconscious conflicts, physiological disease, and environmental excess. Readers in today's weight-conscious society will be surprised to learn that being overweight was actually encouraged by doctors and popular health magazines up until the 1930s, when the health risks associated with being overweight were publicly recognized. Thus began decades of research and experiments that subsequently explained appetite, metabolism, and the development of fat cells. Pool effectively reanimates the colorful characters, curious experiments, brilliant insights and wrong turns that led to contemporary scientific understanding of America's epidemic. While he acknowledges the advances in the pharmacological fight against flab, he underscores that the real problem of obesity is not losing the weight but keeping it off. Drugs offer a quick fix, but they aren't the ultimate answer. American society must remedy the unhealthy daily environments of its cities and towns, and those who have struggled with their weight and have experienced the "yo-yo" cycle of dieting must understand the underlying science of body weight that makes their struggle more than a question of willpower.

Fat: Fighting the Obesity Epidemic, by science writer Robert Pool, is the story of obesity research: the quest to find out why people get fat, why certain people are more likely to gain weight than others, why it's so difficult to lose weight, how the body's weight-regulating system works, how genes and environment interact to produce obesity, and why dieters regain their weight more than 90 percent of the time.

Pool presents story after story about the obesity scientists and their research, along with the evolution of social attitudes about corpulence. Some of the anecdotes are entertaining, such as the description of a 1911 experiment where a researcher inflated a condom in his belly, attached to a tube that went through his esophagus and out his mouth, to measure stomach contractions during hunger. Others may make you shudder, such as the story of 515-pound J.W., who lost weight in a hospital on a 600- to 800-calorie liquid diet 25 times, always rebounding afterwards to his previous weight.

Pool favors the leptin gene as a major clue to the mystery of obesity and treats it with more scientific detail than any other topic. Leptin, Pool explains, "regulates appetite and metabolism to keep the body at a stable, preferred weight." The brains of people with a mutation that results in deficient leptin production perceive their bodies as perpetually starving--even though they may be 50 or 100 pounds overweight.

Fat isn't a quick read and it won't tell you how to lose weight. It will appeal primarily to sociologists and those interested in the science of obesity. If that's you, you'll find this book to be a treasure trove of information. --Joan Price

Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome: A Reversible Thyroid Problem

Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome: A Reversible Thyroid Problem Lowest new price: $68.87
Lowest used price: $2.95
List price: $21.95
Author: E. Denis Wilson MD
Brand: Brand: Cornerstone Pub Co

Formerly titled, Wilson's Syndrome -- The Miracle of Feeling Well, this book describes a recently discovered reversible thyroid problem.

If you're suffering from symptoms of low thyroid function, and your thyroid blood tests are normal, that may mean that your symptoms are curable! Many patients with symptoms like Fatigue, Depression, Fluid Retention, Easy weight gain, PMS, Headaches, Migraines, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Itchiness, Insomnia, and many others, respond very well to the right kind of thyroid medicine given in the right way, even when their thyroid tests are normal. And more importantly, the symptoms often remain improved even after the treatment’s been discontinued.

This thyroid problem, Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome, is reversible in the same way that certain female hormone problems are reversible. For example, some women with irregular periods can be cycled on birth control pills for several months to regulate their bleeding. Then, when they are weaned off the pill, their periods often remain regular even after the pill’s been discontinued. Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome is a similar reversible hormone imbalance that affects the thyroid system instead of the female hormone system.

This book is an excellent description of the syndrome and its manifestations and introduces the treatment of WTS. It fully explains what it feels like to have WTS so people can get a very good idea of whether or not they think they may be suffering from it.

If people do believe that they may have the condition, the Doctor’s Manual for Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome explains the treatment protocol in complete detail.

Metabolic Profiling: Its Role in Biomarker Discovery and Gene Function Analysis

Metabolic Profiling: Its Role in Biomarker Discovery and Gene Function Analysis Lowest new price: $46.93
Lowest used price: $22.42
List price: $159.99

It is evident that biochemical control is not strictly hierarchical and that intermediary metabolism can contribute to control of regulatory pathways. Metabolic studies are therefore increasingly important in gene function analyses, and an increased interest in metabolites as biomarkers for disease progression or response to therapeutic intervention is also evident in the pharmaceutical industry. This book offers guidelines to currently available technology and bioinformatics and database strategies now being developed. Evidence is presented that metabolic profiling is a valuable addition to genomics and proteomics strategies devoted to drug discovery and development, and that metabolic profiling offers numerous advantages.
