The gastrointestinal tract is a complex anaerobic microbial ecosystem containing a vast assemblage of resident microorganisms performing a multitude of metabolic activities that play a key role in health and disease of humans and animals. Furthermore, the gastrointestinal microbes have a dominant impact on the growth and productivity of both ruminant and non-ruminant animals. This two-volume series on Gastrointestinal Microbiology reviews the literature and provides a comprehensive account of the biological significance of the microbiota present in the alimentary tract of a wide range of animals, in terms of their nutritional ecology, biochemical activities, development and composition, interactions and role in host health and disease. Recent developments in the areas of molecular ecology, bacterial genetics, immunological aspects of host microbe interactions at the level of the intestinal mucosa, bacterial translocation and intestinal disease are included. Although emphasis is placed on domestic ruminants and man, systems which have been extensively researched, this series also provides a full and integrated account of the nutritional ecology and microbial ecology in the gut of many diverse mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and insects. This broad perspective allows more realistic interpretation, and better evaluation of, as well as greater insight into, the evolution, ecology, and function of the gastrointestinal ecosystem. These volumes contain contributions from a multidisciplinary group of internationally recognized authors, all active researchers in their particular fields.

This book gives in depth information of the pre and post operative management of patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery, with emphasis on the care required to lessen the potential complications post operation. Patients having undergone surgery face a 10% risk of adverse reaction to the treatment and certain gastrointestinal operations have a 50% risk of postoperative complications, particularly among cancer patients. Consequently preventing complications from arising is of paramount importance. That's what this book sets out to do.

Paul Sugarbaker and his colleagues have persevered in the study and treat ment of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The peritoneal cavity has many unique and incompletely appreciated properties. These properties, coupled with the biologic behavior of many cancers, results in the seeding and growth of these cancers on the peritoneum. Many of these cancers remain localized to the peritoneum only, never metastasizing to other sites. One possible reason for this may be the obstruction of the afferent lymphatics on the undersurface of the diaphragm. The mucopolysaccharides produced by many of these neoplasma are probably viscous enough to obstruct these lymphatics, leading to the syndrome of pseudomyxoma peritonei. Many of the neoplasms taking residence on the peritoneum have extremely long cell-cycle times and are resistant to radiotherapy and many chemotherapeutic agents. How ever, much can be done for these patients - resection of primary cancers, omentectomies to reduce ascites formation, management of recurrent ascites, management of intestinal obstruction, nutritional care, and, hopefully, intraperitoneal chemotherapy. We have reviewed many of these problems in the past [1-7]. Dr. Sugarbaker and his colleagues have organized the current state of knowledge and technology for continuing use. The book provides a basis for thoughtful, prospective research planning. John S. Spratt, M. D. , F. A. C. S. Lowest used price: $115.09
List price: $284.00
Author: Bridget S. Wilkins
Brand: Bridget S Wilkins Dennis H Wright

The major aim of this book is to demystify splenic pathology for nonspecialist consultants and trainees in histopathology. The interpretation of pathological changes in the human spleen provides a significant challenge to the skills of even the most highly trained histopathologists. This comprehensive account of the most important and frequently encountered pathological conditions affecting the spleen is highly illustrated in color throughout with numerous detailed macroscopic and microscopic specimens. Emphasis is placed on the importance of adequate clinical information and technical preparation of splenectomy specimens in obtaining the best possible histopathological assessment of the tissue. A systematic, analytical approach to interpretation of pathological changes is used throughout the book. This text should enable readers to feel confident in their assessment of significant processes within the spleen. This volume will serve as an illustrated atlas, bench manual, text, and reference source.
