The introduction of parenteral nutrition support has given patients with short bowel syndrome the time they need to achieve maximal intestinal rehabilitation and has allowed these patients to survive. The pioneering work of Drs. Byrnes and Wilmore in the 1990s focused on novel techniques to enhance intestinal adaptation and absorption, including modification of diet, special nutrients, oral rehydration solutions, growth factors, and surgical techniques. Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation: A Clinical Guide brings together an expert group of clinicians to help us understand current information regarding the prevention, diagnosis, care, and management of patients with intestinal failure.

Paul Sugarbaker and his colleagues have persevered in the study and treat ment of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The peritoneal cavity has many unique and incompletely appreciated properties. These properties, coupled with the biologic behavior of many cancers, results in the seeding and growth of these cancers on the peritoneum. Many of these cancers remain localized to the peritoneum only, never metastasizing to other sites. One possible reason for this may be the obstruction of the afferent lymphatics on the undersurface of the diaphragm. The mucopolysaccharides produced by many of these neoplasma are probably viscous enough to obstruct these lymphatics, leading to the syndrome of pseudomyxoma peritonei. Many of the neoplasms taking residence on the peritoneum have extremely long cell-cycle times and are resistant to radiotherapy and many chemotherapeutic agents. How ever, much can be done for these patients - resection of primary cancers, omentectomies to reduce ascites formation, management of recurrent ascites, management of intestinal obstruction, nutritional care, and, hopefully, intraperitoneal chemotherapy. We have reviewed many of these problems in the past [1-7]. Dr. Sugarbaker and his colleagues have organized the current state of knowledge and technology for continuing use. The book provides a basis for thoughtful, prospective research planning. John S. Spratt, M. D. , F. A. C. S. Surgical Treatment for Digestive Cancer in Japan (Special Issue: Digestive Surgery 2007)

Surgical Treatment for Digestive Cancer in Japan (Special Issue: Digestive Surgery 2007) Lowest new price: $34.00
List price: $34.00

Special Topic Issue: Digestive Surgery 2007, Vol. 24, No. 2 Even though the pathological characteristics of digestive cancer are universally the same, there are differences in prevalence and pathogenesis between countries or areas, originating from social and cultural differences such as environment, food, or customs. Accordingly, the diagnostic methods, surgical treatment and prevention of digestive cancer vary among countries. Moreover, the health service system and socio-economic circumstances may also bring about many differences. In order to provide new and better approaches to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of digestive cancer, it is very helpful to not only discuss the essential and common knowledge of the disease, but also to recognize these underlying social and cultural variations between countries or areas: There clearly exist differences in diagnostic methods, surgical treatment, chemotherapy and prevention between Japan and Western countries. Presenting the current topics of surgical treatment of digestive cancer in Japan, this publication intends to initiate a mutual exchange of updated knowledge as an important factor in achieving advances in basic and clinical research and much better clinical results.
