Animal Minds: Beyond Cognition to Consciousness

Animal Minds: Beyond Cognition to Consciousness Lowest new price: $30.49
Lowest used price: $11.81
List price: $41.00
Author: Donald R. Griffin
Brand: Donald R Griffin

In Animal Minds, Donald R. Griffin takes us on a guided tour of the recent explosion of scientific research on animal mentality. Are animals consciously aware of anything, or are they merely living machines, incapable of conscious thoughts or emotional feelings? How can we tell? Such questions have long fascinated Griffin, who has been a pioneer at the forefront of research in animal cognition for decades, and is recognized as one of the leading behavioral ecologists of the twentieth century.

With this new edition of his classic book, which he has completely revised and updated, Griffin moves beyond considerations of animal cognition to argue that scientists can and should investigate questions of animal consciousness. Using examples from studies of species ranging from chimpanzees and dolphins to birds and honeybees, he demonstrates how communication among animals can serve as a "window" into what animals think and feel, just as human speech and nonverbal communication tell us most of what we know about the thoughts and feelings of other people. Even when they don't communicate about it, animals respond with sometimes surprising versatility to new situations for which neither their genes nor their previous experiences have prepared them, and Griffin discusses what these behaviors can tell us about animal minds. He also reviews the latest research in cognitive neuroscience, which has revealed startling similarities in the neural mechanisms underlying brain functioning in both humans and other animals. Finally, in four chapters greatly expanded for this edition, Griffin considers the latest scientific research on animal consciousness, pro and con, and explores its profound philosophical and ethical implications.

Do animals think? According to Cartesian models of science that have long influenced the Western view of the natural world, they do not: they merely react to external stimuli, the responses to which they cannot control.

A different view has emerged in recent years, one that draws on findings from experimental psychology, biology, linguistics, and cognitive ethology. Writes Donald Griffin, an associate at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology, "Communicative behavior is not a human monopoly." Animal communication--from the dance language of the bees to the vocalisms of parrots and bonobos--suggests that there is more than a ghost in the machine. For underlying that communicative ability are other powers that humans have no easy way of gauging: a sense of time and futurity, a complex memory, an ability to lie, even consciousness itself.

Griffin examines recent studies that show that many species are able to discern and classify colors, shapes, materials, and "sameness," and that many other species are able to adapt their communications systems to account for novel situations. Warning that our understanding of animal minds is still ill-formed and that much work remains to be done in the field before we can confidently answer that ancient question one way or the other, he argues that "animals are best viewed as actors who choose what to do, rather than as objects totally dependent on outside influences." --Gregory McNamee

Stress: Conceptual and Biological Aspects

Stress: Conceptual and Biological Aspects Lowest used price: $27.85
List price: $240.00
Author: Frederick Toates

Despite the growing literature on the subject of stress, there are surprisingly few publications which integrate the different areas of stress research. This timely and accessible book describes the relationship between behavioural phenomena and the biological foundations of stress. A range of definitions of this subject are discussed such as external stressors, hormonal states and pathological consequences, highlighting the difficulties and ambiguities in the use of the term ?stress?. The book illustrates how stress arises when behavioural and coping mechanisms fail to allow organisms to respond effectively to environmental challenges. Other topics include the hypothalamic?pituitary?adrenocortical system and the sympathetic adreno-medullary systems and how they react to stressors, stress induced analgesia, immune system interactions and stereotypies. The use of a model of coping is the focal point, involving either active or passive coping strategies.

Written by an author who has extensive experience in the field of behavioural science, the book will have a wide audience including advanced level undergraduates and postgraduates in psychology, physiology, medicine, ethology and veterinary sciences, as well as research scientists in these areas. "A remarkably perspicuous analysis of the nature and controls of stress. The author has integrated in beautiful fashion a bewildering and diverse scientific literature into an organized and compelling presentation. This book should be read by any psychologists, neuroscientists, physiologists or other individual interested in the topic of stress." Dr Kent Berridge, Department of Psychology, University of Michigan "It is a goldmine of information." Per Jensen, Professor of Ethology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

Insect Lives: Stories of Mystery and Romance from a Hidden World

Insect Lives: Stories of Mystery and Romance from a Hidden World Lowest new price: $75.42
Lowest used price: $4.00
List price: $28.50
Brand: Brand: Harvard University Press

Insects inhabit an often unexamined microcosmos, pursuing lives that are often strange beyond our wildest imaginings. From the dawn of humanity, our six-legged fellow Earthlings have repelled and enthralled us. Humans have exterminated, eaten, domesticated, and even excommunicated insects. We collect them, we curse them, and we have penned a surprising body of literature about them.

Insect Lives: Stories of Mystery and Romance from a Hidden World offers an entertaining and informative survey of the human fascination, dreadful and otherwise, with insects diabolical and divine, from accounts in the Bible and Aristotle to the writings of Charles Darwin and the great nineteenth-century naturalists sending home accounts from the rain forest. Highlighted here are observations from E. O. Wilson, Jean-Henri Fabré, David Quammen, May Berenbaum, Roger Swain, William Wordsworth, A. S. Byatt, Gary Larson and more than sixty other writers who tell of the mystery and romance of that other, hidden world beneath our feet and beyond our rolled-up newspapers.

Foundations of Animal Behavior: Classic Papers with Commentaries

Foundations of Animal Behavior: Classic Papers with Commentaries Lowest new price: $46.80
Lowest used price: $20.00
List price: $52.00
Brand: Brand: University Of Chicago Press

Beginning with Darwin's work in the 1870s, Foundations of Animal Behavior selects the most important works from the discipline's first hundred years—forty-four classic papers—and presents them in facsimile, tracing the development of the field. These papers are classics because they either founded a line of investigation, established a basic method, or provided a new approach to an important research question.

The papers are divided into six sections, each introduced by prominent researchers. Sections one and two cover the origins and history of the field and the emergence of basic methods and approaches. They provide a background for sections three through six, which focus on development and learning; neural and hormonal mechanisms of behavior; sensory processes, orientation, and communication; and the evolution of behavior.

This outstanding collection will serve as the basis for undergraduate and graduate seminars and as a reference for researchers in animal behavior, whether they focus on ethology, behavioral ecology, comparative psychology, or anthropology.

Comprehensive Radiographic Pathology, 3e

Comprehensive Radiographic Pathology, 3e Lowest new price: $14.96
Lowest used price: $3.89
List price: $72.95
Author: Ronald L. Eisenberg

This well-illustrated textbook provides a foundation in the basic principles of pathology and familiarizes readers with the radiographic appearances of diseases and injuries that are most likely to be diagnosed with medical imaging. An introductory chapter on pathology introduces the pathologic terms used throughout the book. This chapter also describes the advantages and limitations of six widely-used modalities: ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and positron emission tomography (PET). Each of the remaining chapters covers the pathology of a particular body system. A new summary of findings follows each major discussion of common pathologies and is presented in an easy-to-read table. Chapter outlines, goals, objectives, Radiographer Notes - helpful suggestions on how to produce optimal radiographs of a specific organ system - and end-of-chapter questions help readers understand concepts and assess their comprehension.

  • High-quality radiographs and images from other modalities are reproduced on glossy paper, providing the best possible demonstration of the radiographic appearance of different diseases and injuries.
  • Comprehensive coverage helps readers develop a true understanding of disease processes and their radiographic appearance, including information essential for further required courses in radiographic pathology.
  • Pathology of various body systems is organized in separate chapters, each broken down into an initial discussion of general physiology followed by various pathologic conditions and their radiographic appearance and treatment.
  • If multiple imaging modalities can be used, the best initial procedure is indicated, as well as the sequence in which varying imaging studies should be performed.
  • Study and review tools such as objectives, goals, and end-of-chapter questions with answers at the back of the book help readers know what they should learn from each chapter and provide the opportunity to review concepts.
