Lowest used price: $20.00
List price: $907.93
Author: Jacqueline Susann
Brand: Morrow

Every Night, Josephine!, originally published in 1963, may not have nearly as much pill-popping and sex as Valley of the Dolls, the book that made its author a sensation. But it is definitely Jacqueline Susann all the way—witty and full of dead-on observations.

After exploring the crazy world of pedigree dogs, Susann finally acquires a magnificent poodle, Josephine. The pampered poodle soon secures the dominant role in this budding relationship—and as our hirsute heroine dances through a ballet of network TV appearances, sidewalk encounters with Garbo, and doggy-bags from Sardi’s, even Susann’s dog-hating husband submits to her canine charms. Fans of Jacqueline Susann, kitsch lovers, and pet pamperers alike will be helpless to resist this laugh- out-loud classic.

Author: Aubrey Manning
Brand: Brand: Cambridge University Press

Using its powerful beak, a lorikeet gently preens its mate's feathers; young cheetahs rest together in the shade; fireflies semaphore to each other across a darkened landscape and a mongoose deftly bites its prey to death. The study of animal behavior is about all these things and more. It involves absolute stillness and violent activity, all the noises and smells and changes of color and shape that characterize animal life. Taking the organization of behavior within the individual animal as its core, this clear, concise and readable foray into the fascinating world of animal behavior investigates Tinbergen's questions of causation, evolution, development and function. It provides lucid accounts of all levels of behavior from the nerve cell to that of the population. The broad biological approach of this new, rewritten edition makes it an excellent choice for all students of animal behavior and psychology and their teachers.

Lowest used price: $2.67

Author: Elizabeth Renaghan

Explains how to supplement a dog's diet with vitamins and minerals, use natural remedies, and protect the dog from common diseases

Just like humans, dogs require exercise and proper nutrition to keep them in top physical form. While most of us are pretty good at giving our pets plenty of exercise, we don't have the slightest idea what constitutes good nutrition for dogs. Earl Mindell's Nutrition and Health for Dogs is the perfect antidote, providing everything responsible dog owners need to know about their dogs' nutritional needs.

Mindell, author of Earl Mindell's Herb Bible and Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible, offers a clear, concise, and easy-to-read guide to the dos and don'ts of dog nutrition, beginning with a general overview of canine nutritional needs. This covers such topics as water quality, fresh foods, and the inadequacy of most commercial dog food. The sections on vitamins and minerals feature nicely laid-out charts explaining the importance of each element, the foods that contain it, and how to tell if your dog is getting too much or too little. The rest of the book examines more specific aspects of canine health, including your dog's immune system, natural flea control, and common diseases and their treatments. The section on breed-specific problems is especially useful to prospective dog owners, alphabetically listing genetic defects as well as ailments that might arise from various environmental/dietary factors. With its clear, logical layout, handy graphs, and glossary, Earl Mindell's Nutrition and Health for Dogs will help you add years of healthy and happy living to your dog's life.

Do Animals Think?

Do Animals Think? Lowest new price: $5.95
Lowest used price: $0.99
List price: $55.00
Author: Clive D. L. Wynne
Brand: Brand: Princeton University Press

Does your dog know when you've had a bad day? Can your cat tell that the coffee pot you left on might start a fire? Could a chimpanzee be trained to program your computer? In this provocative book, noted animal expert Clive Wynne debunks some commonly held notions about our furry friends. It may be romantic to ascribe human qualities to critters, he argues, but it's not very realistic. While animals are by no means dumb, they don't think the same way we do. Contrary to what many popular television shows would have us believe, animals have neither the "theory-of-mind" capabilities that humans have (that is, they are not conscious of what others are thinking) nor the capacity for higher-level reasoning. So, in Wynne's view, when Fido greets your arrival by nudging your leg, he's more apt to be asking for dinner than commiserating with your job stress.

That's not to say that animals don't possess remarkable abilities--and Do Animals Think? explores countless examples: there's the honeybee, which not only remembers where it found food but communicates this information to its hivemates through an elaborate dance. And how about the sonar-guided bat, which locates flying insects in the dark of night and devours lunch on the wing?

Engagingly written, Do Animals Think? takes aim at the work of such renowned animal rights advocates as Peter Singer and Jane Goodall for falsely humanizing animals. Far from impoverishing our view of the animal kingdom, however, it underscores how the world is richer for having such a diversity of minds--be they of the animal or human variety.

The Technology of Orgasm: "Hysteria," the Vibrator, and Women's Sexual Satisfaction (Johns Hopkins Studies in the History of Technology)

The Technology of Orgasm: "Hysteria," the Vibrator, and Women's Sexual Satisfaction (Johns Hopkins Studies in the History of Technology) Lowest new price: $29.06
Lowest used price: $7.75
List price: $45.00
Author: Rachel P. Maines
Brand: Brand: The Johns Hopkins University Press

From the time of Hippocrates until the 1920s, massaging female patients to orgasm was a staple of medical practice among Western physicians in the treatment of "hysteria," an ailment once considered both common and chronic in women. Doctors loathed this time-consuming procedure and for centuries relied on midwives. Later, they substituted the efficiency of mechanical devices, including the electric vibrator, invented in the 1880s. In The Technology of Orgasm, Rachel Maines offers readers a stimulating, surprising, and often humorous account of hysteria and its treatment throughout the ages, focusing on the development, use, and fall into disrepute of the vibrator as a legitimate medical device.

For centuries, women diagnosed with "hysteria"--a "disease paradigm," in Rachel P. Maines's felicitous phrase, thought to result from a lack of sexual intercourse or gratification--were treated by massaging their genitals in order to induce "paroxysm." Male physicians, however, considered the practice drudgery, and sought various ways of avoiding the task, often foisting it off on midwives or, starting in the late 19th century, employing mechanical devices. Eventually, these devices became available for purchase and home use; one such "portable vibrator" is advertised in the 1918 Sears, Roebuck catalog as an "aid that every woman appreciates." The Technology of Orgasm is an impeccably researched history that combines a discussion of hysteria in the Western medical tradition with a detailed examination (including several illustrations) of the devices used to "treat" the "condition." (Maines is somewhat dismissive of the contemporary, phallus-shaped models, which she describes as "underpowered battery-operated toys," insisting that "it is the AC-powered vibrator with at least one working surface at a right angle to the handle that is best designed for application to the clitoral area.") Don't expect any cheap thrills, though; the titillation Maines offers is strictly intellectual. --Ron Hogan
