Basic Environmental Technology: Water Supply, Waste Management and Pollution Control (4th Edition) Lowest new price: $32.06
Lowest used price: $9.79
List price: $117.60
Author: Jerry A. Nathanson

This clearly written, easy-to-read book offers a practical introduction to the topics of water supply, waste management, and pollution control. Because of the wide scope of the subject matter, the author has included review sections so that readers with little knowledge of biology, chemistry, geology, or hydraulics can comprehend and use this book, and mathematical topics are introduced at a relatively basic level. An overview of environmental technology introduces the book, and includes a discussion of public health, ecology, geology, and soils. The book then focuses on water and wastewater topics, including hydraulics and hydrology, water quality and water pollution, drinking water treatment and distribution, sewage collection, sewage treatment and disposal, and stormwater water management. Municipal solid waste, hazardous waste, air pollution, and noise pollution are also discussed. For individuals working in the fields of environmental quality control and public health protection, as well as civil engineers, wastewater technicians, and water treatment professionals.

Design and Retrofit of Wastewater Treatment Plants for Biological Nutritient Removal, Volume V

Design and Retrofit of Wastewater Treatment Plants for Biological Nutritient Removal, Volume V Lowest new price: $1,183.29
Lowest used price: $410.36
List price: $149.95

This book presents information that can be used for the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants that utilize biological nutrient removal processes, i.e., processes that utilize biological mechanisms instead of chemical mechanisms, to remove phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewaters. The book provides: basic fundamentals, concepts, and theories; design of prefermentation units, various types of BNR systems, and secondary clarifiers; retrofitting conventional activated sludge plants; modeling considerations; and special considerations for BNR systems. It includes full-scale and pilot plant case histories, design examples, and retrofit of existing plants.

The Politics of Radioactive Waste Disposal (Issues in Environmental Politics)

The Politics of Radioactive Waste Disposal (Issues in Environmental Politics) Lowest new price: $57.90
Lowest used price: $1.82
List price: $29.95
Author: Ray Kemp

This work examines the complex national and international approaches to radioactive waste disposal problems. The text also describes new methods of public accountability for disposal with regard to policy-makers and decision-makers. The book emphasizes that the hub of the problem lies in fundamentally differing perceptions of the risks associated with the disposal of nuclear waste. For the industry itself, the technical issues, although they create difficult practical problems for geologists and engineers, are clearly defined. The volumes and types of waste and their potential for harm to humans and the environment are better understood than for many other industries. The level of investment in financial and intellectual resources taken to close the "back end" of the nuclear industry has got it right. But many people remain unconvinced that the nuclear industry has got it right. True, there may well be a lack of understanding, but public perceptions of risk are driven as much by policy consistency, openness in an industry's activities and trust in the motives of those creating the hazard in the first place. And the difficulty lies in the fact that public mistrust and perception of risk appear to be comparatively robust and resistant to change. To seek to change people's attitudes and opinions about the nuclear industry and radioactive waste disposal in particular is to address the problem from the wrong direction. If change is desired then it must come form the practices and procedures of the industry and from the process and accountability of government policy. Only then can public tolerability for radioactive waste disposal become more than just an academic notion. One unhelpful concept which academics have helped to establish in more common parlance is that of the "Not In My Back Yard" (NIMBY) response to controversial projects. The author argues that the NIMBY label should be avoided since it invariably undervalues many sincerely held public concerns about the potential harm to the local environment which can be associated with proposed developments.

Nuclear Reactions: The Politics of Opening a Radioactive Waste Disposal Site

Nuclear Reactions: The Politics of Opening a Radioactive Waste Disposal Site Lowest new price: $83.56
Lowest used price: $7.81
List price: $19.95
Author: Chuck McCutcheon
Brand: Brand: University of New Mexico Press

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), located beneath the desolate flatlands near Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico, is the first facility of its kind in the world--the most elaborate and expensive landfill opened to date that permanently houses mankind's deadliest garbage.

The project is intended to entomb, in a salt formation 2,150 feet underground, four decades' worth of protective gloves, clothing, and other items contaminated with plutonium and other radioactive materials used in building nuclear weapons. The nuclear waste--enough to fill more than sixty-five football fields--is sent to WIPP from U.S. Department of Energy sites in Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, Washington, and elsewhere. The plant is regarded both as a coda to the Cold War legacy of weapons production and as a prototype for future environmental cleanup projects.

Although WIPP has won widespread scientific and political support, it has been a quagmire of conflicting views about national energy policy. Technical and environmental questions dogged it long before being built, and debates over its use have continued since its opening in 1999. This book marks the first effort to trace WIPP's evolution comprehensively and impartially, from its earliest days as the brainchild of a group of local residents eager to create jobs through two decades of scientific studies, political decisions, environmental protests, and court challenges. It includes interviews with and character sketches of politicians, environmentalists, and scientists and explores the lessons that this hotly divisive project can teach us.
