Computational Rheology
Lowest new price: $120.00
Lowest used price: $117.72
List price: $144.00
Author: Robert G Owens
Brand: Brand: World Scientific Publishing Company

Modern day highperformance computers are making available to 21stcentury scientists solutions to rheological flow problems of everincreasing complexity. Computational rheology is a fastmoving subject — problems which only 10 years ago were intractable, such as 3D transient flows of polymeric liquids, nonisothermal nonNewtonian flows or flows of highly elastic liquids through complex geometries, are now being tackled owing to the availability of parallel computers, adaptive methods and advances in constitutive modelling.Computational Rheology traces the development of numerical methods for nonNewtonian flows from the late 1960's to the present day. It begins with broad coverage of nonNewtonian fluids, including their mathematical modelling and analysis, before specific computational techniques are discussed. The application of these techniques to some important rheological flow problems of academic and industrial interest is then treated in a detailed and uptodate exposition. Finally, the reader is kept abreast of topics at the cutting edge of research in computational applied mathematics, such as adaptivity and stochastic partial differential equations. All the topics in this book are dealt with from an elementary level and this makes the text suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as experienced researchers from both the academic and industrial communities.

Basic Machines and How They Work
Lowest new price: $7.00
Lowest used price: $5.79
List price: $9.95
Author: Naval Education And Training Program
Brand: United States Bureau of Naval Personnel

This revised edition of an extremely clear Navy training manual leaves nothing to be desired in its presentation. Thorough in its coverage of basic theory, from the lever and inclined plane to internal combustion engines and power trains, it requires nothing more than an understanding of the most elementary mathematics. Beginning with the simplest of machines — the lever — the text proceeds to discussions of the block and tackle (pulleys and hoists), wheel and axle, the inclined plane and the wedge, the screw, and different types of gears (simple, spur, bevel, herringbone, spiral, worm, etc.). A chapter on the concept of work discusses the measurement of work, friction, and efficiency; this is followed by investigations of power, force, and pressure, with explanations of the uses of scales, balances, gauges, and barometers. The fundamentals of hydrostatic and hydraulic machines (such as the hydraulic braking system and the hydraulic press) are discussed in detail. The remaining chapters cover machine elements (bearings and springs), basic mechanisms (gear differential, couplings, cams, clutches), the internal combustion engine and power trains (including explanations of various transmission systems — synchromesh, auxiliary, etc.). Every concept is clearly defined, and discussions always build easily from elementary theory to specific applications familiar to anyone with the slightest interest in mechanics. Important concepts, machine components, and techniques are clearly illustrated in more than 200 diagrams, drawings, and crosssections that reveal inner workings — all of these help to clarify even further an already clear and wellorganized presentation. Although it was originally designed for use in U.S. Naval Training Schools, this book can be used to great advantage as a basic text in mechanical engineering in standard technical schools, and it will be immensely valuable even to lay readers who desire a basic knowledge of mechanics.

Fast Radial Basis Functions for Engineering Applications
Lowest new price: $129.00
List price: $129.00
Author: Marco Evangelos Biancolini

This book presents the first “How To” guide to the use of radial basis functions (RBF). It provides a clear vision of their potential, an overview of readyforuse computational tools and precise guidelines to implement new engineering applications of RBF. Radial basis functions (RBF) are a mathematical tool mature enough for useful engineering applications. Their mathematical foundation is well established and the tool has proven to be effective in many fields, as the mathematical framework can be adapted in several ways. A candidate application can be faced considering the features of RBF: multidimensional space (including 2D and 3D), numerous radial functions available, global and compact support, interpolation/regression. This great flexibility makes RBF attractive – and their great potential has only been partially discovered. This is because of the difficulty in taking a first step toward RBF as they are not commonly part of engineers’ cultural background, but also due to the numerical complexity of RBF problems that scales up very quickly with the number of RBF centers. Fast RBF algorithms are available to alleviate this and highperformance computing (HPC) can provide further aid. Nevertheless, a consolidated tradition in using RBF in engineering applications is still missing and the beginner can be confused by the literature, which in many cases is presented with language and symbolisms familiar to mathematicians but which can be cryptic for engineers. The book is divided in two main sections. The first covers the foundations of RBF, the tools available for their quick implementation and guidelines for facing new challenges; the second part is a collection of practical RBF applications in engineering, covering several topics, including response surface interpolation in ndimensional spaces, mapping of magnetic loads, mapping of pressure loads, upscaling of flow fields, stress/strain analysis by experimental displacement fields, implicit surfaces, mesh to cad deformation, mesh morphing for crack propagation in 3D, ice and snow accretion using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data, shape optimization for external aerodynamics, and use of adjoint data for surface sculpting. For each application, the complete path is clearly and consistently exposed using the systematic approach defined in the first section.
