Einstein and Oppenheimer: The Meaning of Genius

Einstein and Oppenheimer: The Meaning of Genius Lowest new price: $18.45
Lowest used price: $4.34
List price: $29.95
Author: Silvan S. Schweber
Brand: Brand: Harvard University Press

Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer, two iconic scientists of the twentieth century, belonged to different generations, with the boundary marked by the advent of quantum mechanics. By exploring how these men differed—in their worldview, in their work, and in their day—this book provides powerful insights into the lives of two critical figures and into the scientific culture of their times. In Einstein’s and Oppenheimer’s philosophical and ethical positions, their views of nuclear weapons, their ethnic and cultural commitments, their opinions on the unification of physics, even the role of Buddhist detachment in their thinking, the book traces the broader issues that have shaped science and the world.

Einstein is invariably seen as a lone and singular genius, while Oppenheimer is generally viewed in a particular scientific, political, and historical context. Silvan Schweber considers the circumstances behind this perception, in Einstein’s coherent and consistent self-image, and its relation to his singular vision of the world, and in Oppenheimer’s contrasting lack of certainty and related non-belief in a unitary, ultimate theory. Of greater importance, perhaps, is the role that timing and chance seem to have played in the two scientists’ contrasting characters and accomplishments—with Einstein’s having the advantage of maturing at a propitious time for theoretical physics, when the Newtonian framework was showing weaknesses.

Bringing to light little-examined aspects of these lives, Schweber expands our understanding of two great figures of twentieth-century physics—but also our sense of what such greatness means, in personal, scientific, and cultural terms.

MIT Wavelength Tables, Vol. 2: Wavelengths by Element

MIT Wavelength Tables, Vol. 2: Wavelengths by Element Lowest new price: $288.09
Lowest used price: $42.83
List price: $140.00

In 1939 George Harrison published his classic Wavelength Tables "with intensities in arc, spark, or discharge tube of more than 100,000 spectrum lines most strongly emitted by the atomic elements under normal conditions of excitation between 10,000 A. and 2000 A. arranged in order of decreasing wavelengths." The book's major strengths were the comprehensiveness of its coverage and the consistency of the conditions under which measurements were taken. A corrected edition published in 1969 is still available from The MIT Press.

The second volume of M.I.T. Wavelength Tables presents a rearrangement of Harrison's spectrum lines by element rather than by wavelength. It also includes wavelengths in vacuum and corresponding wavenumbers, which are important for theoretical studies.

This reference work will be useful to analytical chemists, atomic spectroscopists, astronomers, and other researchers and students who need accessible and comprehensive summaries of lines emitted by a given element.

Frederick M. Phelps III is an associate professor in the Department of Physics at Central Michigan University.

Ageing and the Glass Transition (Lecture Notes in Physics)

Ageing and the Glass Transition (Lecture Notes in Physics) Lowest new price: $95.13
Lowest used price: $43.67
List price: $109.00
Brand: Brand: Springer

Understanding cooperative phenomena far from equilibrium is one of the fascinating challenges of present-day many-body physics. Glassy behaviour and the physical ageing process of such materials are paradigmatic examples. The present volume, primarily intended as introduction and reference, collects six extensive lectures addressing selected experimental and theoretical issues in the field of glassy systems.

Physics with Trapped Charged Particles: A Graduate Textbook with Problems and Solutions (Advanced Textbooks in Physics)

Physics with Trapped Charged Particles: A Graduate Textbook with Problems and Solutions (Advanced Textbooks in Physics) Lowest new price: $57.70
Lowest used price: $50.11
List price: $78.00
Author: Niels Madsen

At Les Houches in January 2015, experts in the field of charged particle trapping came together for the Second Winter School on Physics with Trapped Charged Particles. This textbook collates the lectures delivered there, covering the fundamental physics of particle traps and the different types of applications of these devices. Taken as a whole, the book gives an overview of why traps for charged particles are important, how they work, their special features and limitations, and their application in areas such as precision measurements, mass spectrometry, optical clocks, plasma physics, antihydrogen creation, quantum simulation and quantum information processing. Chapters from various world experts include those on the basic properties of Penning traps and RF traps, as well as those covering important practical aspects such as vacuum systems, detection techniques, and different types of particle cooling including laser cooling. Finally, individual chapters deal with the different area of application listed above. Each chapter is complemented by fully worked problems, making Trapped Charged Particles perfect for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students new to this topic.

The Stability of Matter: From Atoms to Stars : Selecta of Elliott H. Lieb

Lowest used price: $45.85
List price: $98.00

This collection of papers - starting with a brilliant review article by one of the masters of the field - gives an excellent view of our present knowledge of matter. Partially basing his work on a variational formulation of quantum mechanics E.H. Lieb links the difficult question of stability of matter with deep problems of functional analysis. In this collection the reader will find general results together with deep insights into quantum systems combined in papers on the structure of atoms and molecules, on the thermodynamics limit, and on stellar structure. The book is suitable as an accompanying text for a graduate course in quantum mechanics.

Hyperpolarized Xenon-129 Magnetic Resonance: Concepts, Production, Techniques and Applications (New Developments in NMR)

Hyperpolarized Xenon-129 Magnetic Resonance: Concepts, Production, Techniques and Applications (New Developments in NMR) Lowest new price: $190.38
Lowest used price: $298.70
List price: $300.00

Providing the first comprehensive book on the current state of hyperpolarized Xenon-129 NMR and MRI, this book is guaranteed to appeal to a wide range of scientists interested in this growing field. It is intended to create synergy between the various communities working with this noble gas.

Covering all topics from the production of the hyperpolarized gas to its applications, the editors have invited a leading team of experts to combine the physical chemistry within the various topics and across disciplines. The scope will range from the fundamental aspects of optical pumping to practical aspects of hyperpolarizers and hp-xenon handling. The applications section will focus on hyperpolarized xenon-129 detected in the dissolved phase or micro porous media where the chemical shift of xenon-129 can be used as a diagnostic probe.

Appealing to researchers in the biomedical field and materials sciences, this reference book will provide background reading and future looking material in one place.
