These proceedings are the fifth in the series of International Conferences covering fission and properties of neutron-rich nuclei, which are at the forefront of nuclear research. The time interval of 5 years between each conference allows for significant new results to be achieved. Recently, world leaders in theory and experiments in research and the development of new facilities for research presented their latest results in areas such as synthesis of superheavy elements, new facilities for and recent results with radioactive ion beams, structure of neutron-rich nuclei, nuclear fission process, fission yields and nuclear astrophysics. This book is a major source of the latest research in these areas and plans for the future. The conference brought together a unique group of over 100 speakers including leaders from the major nuclear laboratories in Canada, China, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Switerzland and the US along with leading research scientists from around the world.
Readership: Advanced undergraduates and graduate students, and physicists working in the field of nuclear physics.

This volume discusses the aspects of the physics of fusion-relevant plasmas even the relevant aspects of basic plasma physics. It also includes experimental measurements illustrating a great deal of theoretical analysis. It is intended for graduate students in plasma physics, and is also suitable for fusion researchers.

From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970s, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy and nuclear physics laboratories (CERN, DESY, SLAC and Jefferson Lab) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on the Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.

Our understanding of the physical world was revolutionized in the twentieth century - the era of "modern physics". Two books by the second author entitled Introduction to Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations and Advanced Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations, aimed at the very best students, present the foundations and frontiers of today's physics. Many problems are included in these texts. A previous book by the current authors provides solutions to the over 175 problems in the first volume.A third volume Topics in Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations has recently appeared, which covers several subjects omitted in the essentially linear progression in the previous two. This book has three parts: part 1 is on quantum mechanics, part 2 is on applications of quantum mechanics, and part 3 covers some selected topics in relativistic quantum field theory. Parts 1 and 2 follow naturally from the initial volume. The present book provides solutions to the over 135 problems in this third volume. The three volumes in this series, together with the solutions manuals, provide a clear, logical, self-contained, and comprehensive base from which students can learn modern physics. When finished, readers should have an elementary working knowledge in the principal areas of theoretical physics of the twentieth century.

These proceedings review the present status and perspectives of research in this field which is currently of broad interest to the community of nuclear physicists. Many facets of fusion dynamics were discussed, ranging from energies well below the Coulomb barrier to higher energies. Various questions about compound nucleus decay were also addressed, and evidence of links between fusion, competing reactions and nuclear structures were presented. Some talks concerned the superdeformed structures recently discovered in many nuclei. Part of the workshop was devoted to the fusion of very heavy systems, and to the production of superheavy elements. One session focused on fusion reactions with radioactive ion beams.
