From the nineteen sixties onwards a branch of philosophy of science has come to development, called history-oriented philosophy of science. This development constitutes a reaction on the then prevailing logical empiricist conception of scientific knowledge. The latter was increasingly seen as suffering from insurmountable internal problems, like e. g. the problems with the particular "observational-theoretical distinction" on which it drew. In addition the logical empiricists' general approach was increasingly criticized for two external shortcomings. Firstly, the examples of scientific knowledge that the logical empiricists were focusing on were con sidered as too simplistic to be informative on the nature of real life science. Secondly, it was felt that the attention of these philosophers of science was restricted to the static aspects of scientific knowledge, while neglecting its developmental aspects. History-oriented philosophy of science has taken up the challenge implicit in the latter two criticisms, i. e. to develop accounts of science that would be more adequate for understanding the development 1 of real life science. One of the more successful products of this branch of philosophy of science is Lakatos's theory of scientific development, sometimes called the "methodology of scientific research programmes". This theory conceives science as consisting of so called research program mes developing in time, and competing with each other over the issue which one generates the best explan~tions of the phenomena that they address.

The liquid crystalline state has been known for about a century and has been studied by many techniques. Nuclear magnetic resonance has been used to study mesophases for thirty years, but it has been in very recent years that advances in this form of spectroscopy have led to a rapid growth in its applications to the study both of liquid crystals and of solutes dissolved in them. It has become apparent that no other method of studying liquid crystals can yield such a wealth of data and it is unrivalled as a means of probing the behaviour of the molecules in mesophases. There has also been a steady increase in the study of the shape of small molecules dissolved in liquid crystals via the analysis of their NMR spectrum. In fact, the study of solutes was until recently regarded as a separate activity to the study of liquid crystals themselves, but this artificial division arose only from the gap between the large amount of information that could be derived from the spectrum of a small molecule and the rather meagre data set obtainable from the spectra of liquid crystals. This gap has, however, narrowed and it is now possible to derive a very detailed picture of the structure and orientational ordering of the large molecules typical of those which form liquid crystals. There has also been a rapid growth of interest in the liquid crystalline state.

The Multinuclear Approach to NMR Spectroscopy (Nato Science Series C:)

The field of nuclear magnetic resonance has experienced a number of spectacular developments during the last decade. Fourier transform methodology revolutionized signal acquisition capabilities. Superconducting magnets enhanced sensitivity and produced considerable improvement in spectral dispersion. In areas of new applicat ions, the life sciences particularly bene fited from these developments and probably saw the largest increase in usage. NMR imaging promises to offer a noninvasive alternative to X rays. High resolution is now achievable with solids, through magic angle spinning and cross polarization, so that the powers of NMR are applicable to previously intractable materials such as polymers, coal, and other geochemicals. The ease of obtaining relaxation times brought an important fourth variable, after the chemical shift, the coupling constant, and the rate constant, to the examination of structural and kinetic problems i~ all fields. Software development, particularly in the area of pulse sequences, created a host of useful tech niques, including difference decoupling and difference nuclear Overhauser effect spectra, multidimensional displays, signal enhancement (INEPT), coupling constant analysis for connectivity (INADEQUATE), and observation of specific structural classes such as only quaternary carbons. Finally, hardware development gave us access to the entire Periodic Table, to the particular advan tage of the inorganic and organometallic chemist. At the NATO Advanced Study Institute at Stirling, Scotland, the participants endeavored to examine all these advances, except imaging, from a multidisciplinary point of view.

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is presently going through an explosive phase of development. This has been brought about largely on account of the advent of Fourier transform NMR spectrometers linked to powerful microcomputers which have opened up a whole new world for structural chemists and biochemists. This is exemplified by a host of publications, especially on new pulse sequences, which continue to provide new exciting modifications for recording two-dimensional NMR. Moreover, NMR is no longer confined to structural chemists but has moved firmly into the area of medicine as a powerful nondestructive body scanning technique. With this background, I felt that there was need for a text which would provide a fairly comprehensive account of the important features of 1 H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy in one book, as well as make available an up-to-date account of recent developments of new pulse sequences, with particular reference to 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Since this book is written for students of chemistry and biochemistry as well as for biology students who have chemistry as a subsidiary, it was decided to avoid a complex mathematical treatment and to present, as far as possible without oversimplification, a qualitative account of 1 H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy as it is today. I hope that the book satisfactorily meets these objectives.
