Problem Solving in Enzyme Biocatalysis

Problem Solving in Enzyme Biocatalysis Lowest new price: $71.26
Lowest used price: $71.23
List price: $114.00
Author: Andrés Illanes

Enzyme biocatalysis is a fast-growing area in processbiotechnology that has expanded from the traditional fields offoods, detergents, and leather applications to more sophisticateduses in the pharmaceutical and fine-chemicals sectors andenvironmental management. Conventional applications of industrialenzymes are expected to grow, with major opportunities in thedetergent and animal feed sectors, and new uses in biofuelproduction and human and animal therapy.

In order to design more efficient enzyme reactors and evaluateperformance properly, sound mathematical expressions must bedeveloped which consider enzyme kinetics, material balances, andeventual mass transfer limitations. With a focus on problemsolving, each chapter provides abridged coverage of the subject, followed by a number of solved problems illustrating resolutionprocedures and the main concepts underlying them, plussupplementary questions and answers.

Based on more than 50 years of teaching experience, ProblemSolving in Enzyme Biocatalysis is a unique reference forstudents of chemical and biochemical engineering, as well asbiochemists and chemists dealing with bioprocesses.

Contains:
Enzyme properties and applications; enzyme kinetics;enzyme reactor design and operation 146 worked problems andsolutions in enzyme biocatalysis.

Principles and Problems in Physical Chemistry for Biochemists

Principles and Problems in Physical Chemistry for Biochemists Lowest new price: $38.40
Lowest used price: $12.99
List price: $65.00
Author: Nicholas C. Price
Brand: Oxford University Press USA

What use is physical chemistry to the student of biochemistry and biology? This central question is answered in this book mainly through the use of worked examples and problems. The book starts by introducing the laws of thermodynamics, and then uses these laws to derive the equations relevant to the student in dealing with chemical equilibria (including the binding of small molecules to proteins), properties of solutions, acids and bases, and oxidation-reduction processes. The student is thus shown how a knowledge of thermodynamic qualities makes it possible to predict whether, and how, a reaction will proceed.
Thermodynamics, however, gives no information about how fast a reaction will happen. The study of the rates at which processes occur (kinetics) forms the second main theme of the book. This section poses and answers questions such as `how is the rate of a reaction affected by temperature, pH, ionic strength, and the nature of the reactants? These same ideas are then shown to be useful in the study of enzyme-catalysed reactions.

Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics

Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics Lowest new price: $81.00
Lowest used price: $66.69
List price: $104.00
Author: I. Chorkendorff

Until now, the literature has offered a rather limited approach to the use of fundamental kinetics and their application to catalytic reactions. Subsequently, this book spans the full range from fundamentals of kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis via modern experimental and theoretical results of model studies to their equivalent large-scale industrial production processes. This second edition includes significant new developments, with all the chapters updated by way of recent examples and relevant new literature. With its focus on practical application, rather than theory, the result is key knowledge for students at technical universities and professionals already working in industry.

Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics

Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics Lowest new price: $76.17
Lowest used price: $88.08
List price: $120.00
Author: I. Chorkendorff

In the past 12 years since its publication, Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics has become a standard textbook for graduate students at universities worldwide. Emphasizing fundamentals from thermodynamics, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, solid state chemistry and quantum chemistry, it introduces catalysis from a molecular perspective, and stresses how it is interwoven with the field of reaction kinetics. The authors go on to explain how the world of reacting molecules is connected to the real world of industry, by discussing the various scales (nano - micro - macro) that play a role in catalysis. Reflecting the modern-day focus on energy supplies, this third edition devotes attention to such processes as gas-to-liquids, coal-to-liquids, biomass conversion and hydrogen production.

Asymmetric catalysis represents still one of the major challenges in modern organic chemistry. Besides the well-established asymmetric metal-complex-catalysed syntheses and biocatalysis, the use of "pure" organic catalysts turned out to be an additional efficient tool for the synthesis of chiral building blocks. In this handbook, the experienced authors from academia and industry provide the first overview of the important use of such metal-free organic catalysts in organic chemistry. With its comprehensive description of numerous reaction types, e.g., nucleophilic substitution and addition reactions as well as cycloadditions and redox reactions, this book targets organic chemists working in industry and academia, and deserves a place in every laboratory.
