|Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America: A Field-to-kitchen Guide
Lowest new price: $28.69
Lowest used price: $19.99
List price: $39.95
Author: David W. Fischer
Brand: David W Fischer
Unusual shapes and colors make many mushrooms alluring to the eye, while the exotic flavors and textures of edible mushrooms are a gourmet delicacy for the palate. Yet many people never venture beyond the supermarket offerings, fearing that all other mushrooms are poisonous.
With amateur mushroom hunters especially in mind, David Fischer and Alan Bessette have prepared Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America. This field guide presents more than 100 species of the most delicious mushrooms, along with detailed information on how to find, gather, store, and prepare them for the table. More than 70 savory recipes, ranging from soups and salads to casseroles, canapes, quiches, and even a dessert, are included.
Throughout, the authors constantly emphasize the need for correct identification of species for safe eating. Each species is described in detailed, nontechnical language, accompanied by a list of key identifying characteristics that reliably rule out all but the target species. Superb color photographs also aid in identification. Poisonous "lookalikes" are described and illustrated, and the authors also assess the risks of allergic or idiosyncratic reactions to edible species and the possibilities of chemical or bacterial contamination.

List price: $7.50
Author: Richard Kay
This small inexpensive checklist is an annotated inventory of 727 species reported from Kansas. Each mushroom is listed by its scientific Latin name. Below this are synonyms, common English names, the witnesses reporting the finds, and which of the field guides (Arora, Huffman, Lincoff & Peterson) describe the mushroom.
The Index of Latin Names containing 2,758 entries, all main entries by genus and species, and all synonyms by genus and species. Also included is A Systematic List of Kansas Fungi which list all 727 Kansas species according to their place in the fungal kingdom.
The checklist is especially helpful when Arora or some other national field guide leads you to think you have collected a rare or exotic specimen in Kansas; you can quickly discover whether the species has been reported here before.

|The Fungi, Third Edition
Lowest new price: $72.13
Lowest used price: $75.94
List price: $90.95
Author: Sarah C. Watkinson
The Fungi, Third Edition, offers a comprehensive and thoroughly integrated treatment of the biology of the fungi. This modern synthesis highlights the scientific foundations that continue to inform mycologists today, as well as recent breakthroughs and the formidable challenges in current research. The Fungi combines a wide scope with the depth of inquiry and clarity offered by three leading fungal biologists. The book describes the astonishing diversity of the fungi, their complex life cycles, and intriguing mechanisms of spore release. The distinctive cell biology of the fungi is linked to their development as well as their metabolism and physiology. One of the great advances in mycology in recent decades is the recognition of the vital importance of fungi in the natural environment. Plants are supported by mycorrhizal symbioses with fungi, are attacked by other fungi that cause plant diseases, and are the major decomposers of their dead tissues. Fungi also engage in supportive and harmful interactions with animals, including humans. They are major players in global nutrient cycles.
This book is written for undergraduates and graduate students, and will also be useful for professional biologists interested in familiarizing themselves with specific topics in fungal biology.
- Describes the diversity of the fungi, their life cycles, and mechanisms of spore release
- Highlights the study of fungal genetics and draws upon a wealth of information derived from molecular biological research
- Explains the cellular and molecular interactions that underlie the key roles of fungi in plant diversity and productivity
- Elucidates the interactions of fungi with other microbes and animals
- Highlights fungi in a changing world
- Details the expanding uses of fungi in biotechnology

Lowest used price: $10.01
List price: $16.95
Brand: Ralph Metzner
Over 30 contributors share their expertise on the chemical, biological, cultural, psychological, and experiential dimensions of psilocybin mushrooms
• Describes in vivid detail the consciousness-expanding experiences of psychoactive mushroom users
• Provides firsthand accounts of the controversial Harvard Psilocybin Project, including the Concord Prison and Good Friday studies
Teonanácatl was the name given to the visionary mushrooms used in ancient Mesoamerican shamanic ceremonies, mushrooms that contain psilocybin, the psychoactive agent identified by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, the discoverer of LSD. The rediscovery of these visionary mushrooms by the Mazatec healer Maria Sabina and mycologist R. Gordon Wasson ignited a worldwide mushroom culture that inspired the consciousness revolution of the 1960s.
This book describes in vivid detail the consciousness-expanding experiences of psychoactive mushroom users--from artists to psychologists--and the healing visionary inspiration they received. It provides firsthand accounts of studies performed in the controversial Harvard Psilocybin Project, including the Concord Prison study and the Good Friday study. It describes how the use of the psilocybe mushroom spread from the mountains of Mexico into North America, Asia, and Europe by seekers of consciousness-expanding experiences. It also details how psilocybin has been used since the 1960s in psychotherapy, prisoner rehabilitation, the enhancement of creativity, and the induction of mystical experiences and is being studied as a treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
