|George Szell - The Complete Columbia Album Collection
Lowest new price: $195.28
The Szell/Cleveland Recordings Complete! In the heyday of George Szell s tenure as its chief conductor, declared Gramophone, The Cleveland Orchestra had few if any peers among the world s great orchestras. Coinciding with the orchestra s centenary in 2018, Sony Classical is excited to announce one of the most ambitious reissue projects of recent times, a comprehensive collection of the Clevelanders recordings made under the baton of their iconic fourth music director. These span the period between 1947 a year after Szell (born in Budapest in 1897) inherited a fine provincial orchestra from Erich Leinsdorf and began transforming it into the elite ensemble it remains to this day and 1969, a year before his sudden death shocked the musical world. Szell's dream was to create an ensemble that combined the Americans purity and beauty of sound and their virtuosity of execution with the European sense of tradition, warmth of expression and sense of style, in the words of his biographer Michael Charry. That he fulfilled that dream is amply documented in the huge discography that fills Sony s new mega-box of 106 CDs, recordings that are prized for their stylistic rightness, clarity of structure, rhythmic tension, and transparency of texture (The New Yorker). Contained in this vast box are rare mono recordings, some of which have never before appeared on CD, including a Dvo ák New World from 1952, a Beethoven Fifth from 1955 and orchestral extracts from Wagner s Ring from 1956. There are also the recordings Szell made in the early 1950s as guest conductor of the New York Philharmonic, including the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto with Vladimir Horowitz. There are the pianist George Szell s outstanding chamber music recordings, including Mozart with the Budapest Quartet. There are also substantial interviews with the maestro. But the main attraction of this stupendous new set is the prospect of having all the Szell-Cleveland repertoire under a single roof for the first time and in optimal sound. To collectors that means, first and foremost, the great works of the Austro-German Classical and Romantic tradition, starting with Haydn: Szell has the strings playing with immaculate rhythm, perfect intonation, and just the right amount of warmth in the slow movements. This is, in fact, an object lesson not in correct period style, but in the correct Haydn style ... A landmark in the Haydn discography, and a cornerstone of any serious Haydn symphony collection (ClassicsToday).
|Bruch: Scottish Fantasy, Op. 46 / Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 26
Lowest new price: $9.79
Lowest used price: $11.86
Romantic composer Max Bruch s two masterpieces have inspired Scottish Fantasy, the new album from Grammy Award®-winning violinist Joshua Bell. Bell performs and directs the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in his first-ever recording of the virtuosic Scottish Fantasy and offers a fresh take on Bruch s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 26 the first concerto Bell recorded thirty years ago with the Academy conducted then by Sir Neville Marriner. The Scottish Fantasy has become a great favorite of Bell s in the last decade. Bruch s unique fantasia bristles with the snap and lilt of Scottish folksongs, and has been a favorite of violin virtuosos since its premiere. Though Scottish Fantasy is a newer addition to Bell s repertoire, his affection for the piece runs deep. Bell calls Bruch s Violin Concerto #1 the most seductive of violin concertos, saying It s a piece that audiences go crazy over because it s so rich and lush, and it s easy to grasp. It s got excitement, power and passion. About Joshua Bell With a career spanning more than 30 years as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and conductor, Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated violinists today. Bell has recorded more than 40 albums garnering Grammy, Mercury and Gramophone awards. Named the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in 2011, he is the only person to hold this post since 1958 when Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra. About The Academy of St Martin in the Fields The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world s finest chamber orchestras, renowned for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world s greatest orchestral music. Formed in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church in November 1959. Today the Academy, led by Joshua Bell, retains the collegiate spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductor-less ensemble which has become an Academy hallmark. Nonesuch Records releases an album of Bach works recorded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile, and bassist Edgar Meyer, Bach Trios, on April 7, 2017, with the two-LP vinyl edition due April 21. The album comprises works by J.S. Bach originally written for keyboard instruments, plus one sonata for viola da gamba. In 2011, Ma, Thile, and Meyer—along with Stuart Duncan—collaborated on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which won two Grammy Awards.
Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer's first recording together was the 1996 album Appalachia Waltz, which also featured fiddler Mark O'Connor; that album was followed by Appalachian Journey, also with O'Connor, in 2000. Meyer and Thile also began playing together nearly two decades ago, and first performed live as a duo in 2003. They have made two duo albums, 2008's Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile and the Grammy–winning 2014 record Bass & Mandolin.
Thile then joined Meyer on Ma's 2008 holiday album, Songs of Joy and Peace, before the trio reunited, along with Stuart Duncan, for The Goat Rodeo Sessions, an album of original tunes drawing from the musicians' backgrounds in bluegrass, classical, and American roots music. The Goat Rodeo Sessions debuted at number twenty-three on the Billboard 200 chart and number one on the classical and classical crossover charts, as well as number one on the bluegrass chart, where it stayed for eleven weeks. The album was also critically praised, with the Los Angeles Times calling it "haunting, invigorating, often breathtaking."
As Ma told Billboard at that time: "How often do you work with people who are master virtuosos and also master improvisers and composers, who know at least two musical traditions unbelievably well?" He continued, "It's just extraordinary when you have people who can actually show on their instruments what they're thinking at any moment, without a delay. As soon as you think it, it gets transferred in your neuromusculature immediately into sound."
The New York Times said of Yo-Yo Ma, who is considered one of today's foremost interpreters of Bach, "Other cellists hear Bach's suites the same as Mr. Ma, but few if any have the technical means to transfer their imaginings so precisely into sound." Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber music activities. His discography includes more than one hundred albums, eighteen of which have won Grammy Awards. Ma also serves as the Artistic Director of Silkroad, an organization he founded to promote cross-cultural performance and collaborations. More than eighty works have been commissioned specifically for the Silk Road Ensemble, which tours annually. Ma also serves as the Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Negaunee Music Institute and in 2016 was appointed Artistic Advisor to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Brand: Myrios Classics
A Gershwin Moment is upon us: Rhapsody in Blue and the Concerto in F not so long ago marginalized repertoire in limbo between classical and popular genres are now, unapologetically, concert staples. George Gershwin is finally recognized as an early harbinger of musical synergies that we now take for granted. Together with conductor David Robertson and the St. Louis Symphony he plays the Concerto in F as well as the original jazz band version of the Rhapsody in Blue. Program also includes a selection of Gershwin songs in solo piano arrangements by the American pianist Earl Wild. The album features Gerstein s collaboration with two special guests: vocalist Storm Large sings Gershwin s Summertime . Together with the legendary jazz vibraphonist, Gary Burton, Gerstein plays a jazz standard Blame It on My Youth written by Gershwin s close friend, Oscar Levant.
