|Romanza by Andrea Bocelli (1997)
Lowest new price: $1.99
Lowest used price: $0.05
Romanza is the album that launched his career. The 12 selections include "Time to Say Goodbye," Bocelli's spine-tingling #1 single with Sarah Brightman. (66 minutes)
From his childhood on the family farm in rural Tuscany to the worldwide stage, Andrea Bocelli has achieved phenomenal success. His singing is only partially the point, and his fame owes much more to the aura of romance and the romantic archetype that's attached to him. Romanza is by far Bocelli's largest success, winning adoration thanks to the swooning vocals and the easy, sometimes lush, always pop-safe instrumental textures and melodies. As far as his opera chops go, Bocelli has won the approval of Pavarotti but likely will not wow enthusiasts. The upside is that Bocelli will likely grow the opera pie, convincing labels to take on more operatic projects. --Andrew Bartlett

The 50 Best Recordings from the Worlds Greatest Voice of all time Luciano Pavarotti.
Including Pavarottis FIRST EVER recording, officially released for the first time, to mark 50 years of his international career, as well as 50 years with Decca.
These 50 recordings have been digitally remastered making this album the definitive, expertly selected survey of the singers recorded output. The collection takes the listener from Nessun Dorma to Caruso, La Donna E Mobile to Granada and incredible duets with fellow superstars Frank Sinatra, Bono, Eric Clapton and Sting, celebrating these milestones in the late-opera stars long and unprecedented career.
50 years ago this year on September 21st 1963 the legendary Luciano Pavarotti made his first major international opera appearance, deputising for an indisposed Giuseppe di Stefano at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, a performance which brought him to the worlds attention.
1963 also marked the beginning of the 27-year-old singers relationship with Decca, the label he recorded with for his entire career, making this one of the longest exclusive relationships an artist has ever experienced with a major label. Towards the end of his life, Pavarotti said, I have made so many wonderful recordings with Decca. The company has been a major part of my career really, it has been part of my family. Luciano Pavarotti
To celebrate these momentous events, Decca is releasing the first recording ever made of Luciano Pavarottis voice. This historic recording of the aria from La Boheme, Che gelida manina (Your tiny hand is frozen), has been lying dormant in the archives for 50 years, only now to be unearthed, re-mastered and made commercially available for the first time.
This previously unreleased track is here amongst the 50 best recordings ever made by the man who brought opera to the masses, while remaining the critics favorite. Pavarottis voice made soccer fans the world over fall in love with opera, when his version of Nessun Dorma from Puccinis Turandot was used by the BBC as the theme tune for the coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. The enormous success of The Three Tenors followed when Pavarotti teamed up with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, and truly bridged the gap between opera and pop culture. He said himself, Some of the great opera arias themselves are really the best pop songs ever written Luciano Pavarotti

|A to Z of Classical Music (3rd Extended Edition)
Lowest new price: $10.76
Lowest used price: $2.99
A-Z of Classical Music is a remarkable 932-page, illustrated book, detailing the lives of all the great composers as well as many less known, but equally fascinating, musical masters. Like the Naxos range of recordings itself, A-Z of Classical Music is a rich source of inspiration for anyone either just embarking on a lifetime of musical enjoyment or for whom classical music has long been a way of life. Included within is an extensive glossary of musical terms plus a unique guide to classical music used in acclaimed films. Two-and-a-half hours of the finest music from across the centuries are contained on the accompanying CDs.
Is it a two-CD set with a particularly thick booklet, or a 562-page book with a compilation album attached? Either way, the unpretentious text by Keith Anderson offers an introduction to the lives and works of dozens of composers, together with recommended recordings from the Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs. Anderson includes a useful 59-page glossary of musical terms and an extensive listing of classical pieces used in films. The odd thing about the 36 extracts and complete pieces on the CDs is that they do not form an A-to-Z at all. Rather, they are arranged chronologically, from 1,000-year-old Gregorian chant to the opening movement of contemporary composer Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Between these two points is the early music of Palestrina and Byrd; the Baroque glories of Vivaldi and Bach; the 19th-century Romantic masters, from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky; and such 20th-century greats as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Opera, song, and chamber music are barely represented, but only so much can fit into 151 minutes. Essentially a deluxe sampler of the vast Naxos catalogue, the discs offer a good introduction to some of the most famous and melodic music ever composed, while the book will be very useful to newcomers to the potentially confusing world of classical music. --Gary S. Dalkin

|Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 - Barber: Adagio
Lowest new price: $14.72
Lowest used price: $18.21
In his fascinating and scholarly music notes, Maestro Honeck gives us great insight into the history of both pieces, and describes how he conducts and interprets each. He reminds us that Joseph Stalin's Soviet government was offended by Shostakovich's previous works. Under threat of arrest or banishment to Siberia, Shostakovich devised a new, less-complex compositional style for the 5th Symphony, still full of irony and double meaning, to appease Stalin and appeal to the common people. The Adagio of Samuel Barber is his most performed work, and one of the most popular of all 20th Century orchestral works. It is beloved for its beautiful simplicity and emotion. Manfred Honeck describes Barber's 1967 a capella version for mixed choir using the ''Agnus Dei'' text, and tells us his own interpretaiton is inspired by this text. He says it is ''for me, without a doubt, the key to finding a deeper sense of this piece. Perhaps it is for this reason that the Adagio has enchanted and moved audiences around the world since its very first incarnation and has continued to do so in all subsequent versions born since.'' This release is the seventh in the highly acclaimed Pittsburgh Live! series of releases from Reference Recordings.
