Composers have had a long time to try, but no one has yet trumped Fr+ªd+ªric Chopin when it comes to instilling profound emotion into pieces for the piano. Vladimir Ashkenazy, Claudio Arrau, Jorge Bolet and Zolt+¡n Kocsis are among the celebrated performers here, playing his first and second piano concertos plus Nocturnes Nos. 1-20; Nocturne in C Minor (1837); Ballades Nos. 1-4; 24 Preludes, Op. 28; Preludes Nos. 25 & 26; Impromptus Nos. 1-4 , and Waltzes Nos. 1-19 .

Moore / LaTouche: The Ballad of Baby Doe

Moore / LaTouche: The Ballad of Baby Doe Lowest used price: $8.99

Format: Music CD, Deutsche Grammophon Records. Classical music CD release from Douglas Moore and John Latouche with the album The Ballad of Baby Doe. Released on the label Deutsche Grammophon Records. Classical music CD. This hard to find pre-owned music CD is fully guaranteed. This is a two CD set.

Despite its somewhat Disneyesque title, The Ballad of Baby Doe is one of the sturdiest American operas. Its riches-to-rags story of Colorado miner Horace Tabor has a great plot, excellent characters, real arias, and dynamic chorus scenes, and none of it sounds second hand in the least. The opera has an extremely inviting personality of its own. This recording by the New York City Opera is full of crackling fast tempos from conductor Emerson Buckley and great theatricality: right down to the minor characters, everybody knows what they're about. Beverly Sills, Walter Cassel, and Frances Bible all inhabit their roles completely. The one drawback is the recording quality, which is good to voices but mushy on the orchestra. To know what's really going on in the piece musically, one must hear the similarly well-sung but more relaxed 1996 recording made at the venue where the opera was premiered: Central City Opera in Colorado. --David Patrick Stearns

It's a pity that RCA didn't wait until 1978 to record Vladimir Horowitz' shattering Liszt Sonata, rather than issuing this live performance from 1976. Horowitz had just reacquired the work, and its demanding figurations clearly had not settled in all in way. Still, Liszt and Horowitz' heroic voices ring true. The pianist packs everything but the kitchen sink into Mephisto Waltz, adding Busoni's embellishments and a coda of his own devising. By contrast, the gentle Consolation soars with simplicity. For prime Horowitz, turn to his classic 1950 Funérailles, where his big vision and demonic flair prevent the music from becoming a mere octave etude. --Dan Davis

Krystian Zimerman's Chopin is big. He plays this music with a great dynamic range and huge contrasts, with little of the shading we love in Rubinstein's Chopin. Except for the Barcarolle, these are pretty big pieces, so Zimerman doesn't exactly overwhelm the music. It's just very 20th- century Chopin, not on the composer's original scale, but not badly done either. I think this disc would sound a lot better in a large listening room than in a small one, however (or in your car). The recording is too close up; we could have used more distance from the piano. --Leslie Gerber

Piano Sonata 3 / Ballades

Arthur Rubinstein's lifelong affinity for Brahms's youthful and autumnal periods manifests itself throughout these radiant performances. The pianist in his late 70s and early 80s plays here with more solidity and centered rhythm compared with his younger, more freewheeling self: a stylistic shift better suited to this music. Excellent sound, too. --Jed Distler
