Diva: The Singles Collection

Diva: The Video Collection

Live from Las Vegas

La Luna (Live in Concert)

Have some friends who still haven't discovered what the Sarah Brightman fuss is all about? You'll find the perfect introduction to make converts of them all in Classics, so they'll have no more excuses to remain clueless. Sporting a Botticelli-inspired image of the platinum-selling soprano on the cover, Classics is a classy anthology including highlights from three of Brightman's chart-topping releases along with seven new tracks. Songs personally selected by the diva as her favorite classical interpretations are culled from her previous blockbusters: Time To Say Goodbye, Eden, and La Luna. And whether you're a fan already in the fold or one in the making, the new material here shows the diva at the top of her form, in new renderings of "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Nessun Dorma" (accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic)--fascinating displays of the operatic confidence she's developed over her career. Other new offerings include a touching version of Schubert's "Ave Maria,' "Winter Light," a fresh take on her signature song "Pie Jesu" (from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem). "Alhambra" and "Dans La Nuit"--a real treat, bathing the listener in Brightman's silky, sensuous vocalism--add two original titles to her famous adaptations of classical melodies to new lyrics (using Chopin's haunting E major Etude in the latter case). All told, a lovely affirmation of the directions Brightman has boldly taken in her career to date. -Sarah Chin

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Études-tableaux, Vocalise

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Études-tableaux, Vocalise Lowest new price: $12.30
Lowest used price: $7.70
Brand: Reference Recordings

CD

Written in 1940, the Symphonic Dances represent Rachmaninov at the peak of his powers as an orchestral composer. Less lush than his earlier works, free of sentimentality, imaginatively orchestrated, and full of lively rhythms, the piece is red meat for a virtuoso orchestra. The Minnesotans rise to the challenge with superb ensemble and countless solo turns done to perfection. Oue's interpretation, flexible and pointed, lets the dance rhythms drive the three movements and consistently strikes the right mood; just listen to the frigid trumpets that open the second movement and the swirling winds that alternate with them. The Vocalise gets a lovely reading, followed by Respighi's arrangement of five Études-Tableaux that turn those virtuoso piano pieces into deliciously orchestrated tone poems. Kick the volume control up and you get state-of-the-art sonics--solid bass, overwhelming climaxes, and dynamics as wide as a Kansas sky. --Dan Davis

Virtuoso Piano Etudes

Virtuoso Piano Etudes Lowest new price: $63.46

Composers have been challenging pianists with études for a long time. The practice of writing studies for the perfection of a particular pianistic technique developed in the 15th century, but the name study or étude only really came into its own in the 19th century with the rise in popularity of the piano as a domestic instrument. Works of particular importance were Clementis Gradus ad Parnassum, Moscheless Opus 70 Studies, Czernys Art of Finger Dexterity and Liszts Transcendental Studies, the latter even more extensive and complex than Chopins Études Opp. 10 and 25, which transformed the humble piano exercise into concert-worthy material. While each of Liszts and Chopins études examines a particular aspect of technique, these magnificent works never feel like drills. They remain amongst the most popular works written for piano, regularly recorded and performed in concert. In the 20th century, studies gradually evolved into compositions that were music first, only secondarily exploiting a specific technical challenge for the pianist. Notable composers were Claude Debussy, Sergei Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin and Leopold Godowsky. Godowskys Chopin Studies push fingers and feet, mind and imagination, physicality and finesse, fitness, to the outer limits of possibility. By mid-century composers had almost completely abandoned the old tradition. Olivier Messiaens 4 Études de rhythme are not didactic compositions but experiments with dynamics, figurations, pitches, etc. exercises in composition rather than performance. Friedrich Gulda intended his Play Piano Play as exercises in learning the jazz style and improvisation, contrasting traditional neo-Baroque with various jazz traditions. Philip Glass abandoned bar lines to convey his concept of the flow of rhythm, and John Cages Études Boreales, initially deemed unplayable because of the wholly unorthodox techniques they explore, require the performer to play, beat or generate sound on various parts of the instrument. These studies represent some of the most innovative and imaginative writing in the modern and contemporary piano repertoire, exploring to the fullest extent what the instrument is capable of.
