Walt (two-time Emmy® award winner* Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) are in way over their heads in Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season. As their partnership reaches new heights, Walt and Jesse begin to see the extremes of the drug trafficking business. Their trademark blue meth is making them rich, but it's getting more difficult than ever for Walt to conceal the truth from his wife Skyler (Anna Gunn), his son Walter Jr. (RJ Mitte), and his DEA agent brother-in-law Hank (Dean Norris). Walt struggles to maintain control of his life as he contends with vicious drug dealers, an increasingly distant wife and son, the impending birth of his daughter, and a strung-out business partner – all while battling terminal lung cancer. Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season includes cinematography from Michael Slovis as well as Emmy® award-winning** editing from Lynne Willingham, A.C.E. Executive Produced by Vince Gilligan and Mark Johnson.
As Breaking Bad's first year concluded, chemistry teacher Walt (two-time Emmy-winner Bryan Cranston) and his meth-making partner, Jesse (Emmy-nominee Aaron Paul), hooked up with drug kingpin Tuco (Raymond Cruz), and the money started to roll in. They expected some degree of danger--but not a homicidal maniac. When DEA agent Hank (Dean Norris) starts to close in on Tuco, he kidnaps the duo, who eventually escape, but the experience creates a host of new complications, leaving Jesse temporarily homeless and driving a wedge between Walt and his pregnant wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), and their 15-year-old son, Walt Jr. (R. J. Mitte). In his commentary, creator Vince Gilligan explains that the "chickens come home to roost" in season 2 as Walt's criminal activity catches up with him. In effect, he lives out the psychological version of The Fly, with his double life merging into one, such that he starts to become as ruthless as Tuco. Hank, meanwhile, gets a promotion that expands his jurisdiction to El Paso, while Skyler takes an accounting job that could cause her to "break bad" in season 3.
If this AMC hit lacked a sense of humor, it just might be too hard to take. Aside from Walt's incurable illness and Hank's post-traumatic stress disorder, there's a head crushing, a shooting, an explosion, and an overdose. Though Walt and Skyler get few humorous moments, Jesse, Hank, and ambulance-chasing attorney Saul (Mr. Show's Bob Odenkirk, an inspired addition) make the most of theirs. Jesse even gets a girlfriend (Krysten Ritter), who comes with a wary father (John de Lancie)--but there's still more shadow than light (not counting those panoramic desert shots). Strong stuff, but it's impossible to look away. Extensive extras include commentaries, deleted scenes, and featurettes on every episode. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Experience the ultimate way to enjoy “...TV’s best comedy” (Alex Pappademas, GQ), The Office, with this must-own five-disc set that includes every Season Six episode, plus an uncensored original digital short, hours of deleted scenes and much more! Follow Michael (Steve Carell), Dwight (Rainn Wilson), Jim (John Krasinski), Pam (Jenna Fischer), Ryan (B.J. Novak), Andy (Ed Helms) and the rest of the Scranton crew as they pursue new heights of inappropriateness while facing everything from new romances, marriage and parenthood to new ownership, Darryl’s (Craig Robinson) rise to middle management and a ball-busting new boss! Developed for American television by Primetime Emmy® Award winner Greg Daniels, “The Office is so funny it hurts” (Joanna Weiss, The Boston Globe)!
Happily, The Office had a much more productive year than Michael Scott (Steve Carell), who laments to his new boss in the season finale that he has been going through a "rough patch." Reviewing his home movies, he says, "There were only 12 minutes that I felt were worth taping." Season 6 provides ample footage that Officers will want to keep on file. Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) at last get married in the season benchmark, "Niagara," an Emmy-nominated episode (director Paul Feig was robbed!) brimming with hilarious and richly satisfying mental camera "click" moments to treasure. Kathy Bates and Zach Woods are welcome additions to the company as, respectively, Joanna Bennett, the formidable and no-nonsense CEO of Sabre, which purchases the struggling Dunder Mifflin, and Gabe, her intimidated right-hand man. Darryl (Craig Robinson) gets a well-deserved promotion upstairs, Andy (an Emmy-worthy Ed Helms) and Erin (the charming Ellie Kemper) fill the will-they-or-won't-they void left by Jim and Pam with their sweet and awkward courtship that is rife with drama, and Michael is oddly pleased to learn that (spoiler alert) his new girlfriend is married. Not everything works this season. Dwight (Rainn Wilson) hatches a diabolical plan to sabotage the newly promoted Jim, but it goes nowhere, as do his nonsensical negotiations with Angela (Angela Kinsey) to conceive a child. And a clip episode ("The Banker") seems like slacking off. But there is no reprimanding the ensemble for its total investment in their characters, whom Joanna rightly calls "some of the loveliest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing." Each episode has giddy grace notes (the camera catches Creed moved to tears by an opera aria in "The Lover") and priceless bits of comic business (Pam turns Borsht Belt comedian in "Body Language," Joanna gives budding author Toby unsolicited advice on his novel in progress in "Whistleblower"). And for the first time, the season-ending cliffhanger does not involve Jim and Pam, but the series' second most beloved couple. There are two disappointing omissions from this five-disc set. The Halloween-themed cold open has been excised from the episode "Koi Pond," and the viral sensation Subtle Sexuality webisodes, including the "Male Prima Donna" music video, are not included among the bonus features. --Donald Liebenson

Doctor Who: Keys of Marinus, The
On a remote island of glass surrounded by a sea of acid, there is a machine that can remove evil from the minds of an entire population – the Conscience of Marinus. Fearful of its immense power falling into thewrong hands, its sole guardian has scattered the machine’s operating keys across the planet. The TARDIS crew arrives to find the island underattack by the evil Voord. Marinus’ last line of defense – and its only hope – is the Conscience machine. The Doctor and his companions must undertake a deadly quest to recover the keys of Marinus.]]>
For all the Whos in Whoville (sorry, wrong Doctor), this vintage Doctor Who adventure from the venerable British series' inaugural season is a must-own collectible. For the uninitiated, Doctor Who is television's longest-running science fiction series and it has gained a cult following that rivals those of Star Trek and Star Wars. Dr. Who, portrayed here in his first incarnation by William Hartnell, is a Time Lord who travels the cosmos in a spacecraft called the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), whose exterior looks like a police call box.
Originally broadcast in 1964, The Keys of Marinus is a six-episode arc that features the doctor's original traveling companions, science teacher Ian Chesterton, history teacher Barbara Wright, and the doctor's granddaughter, Susan, who is given to screaming at the first sign of peril. Hartnell's doctor is a sprightly curmudgeon who relishes adventure and mystery, which he finds after the group lands on Marinus, an island of glass surrounded by a sea of acid. Doctor and company are compelled to retrieve four microcircuits that are the keys to the Conscience of Marinus, a computer that has eliminated evil from the minds of men (except apparently the evil Yartek and his web-suited Voords, who want to seize the machine). Their quest takes them most memorably to "a planet of the most contented people" (beware the brainwashing powers of the "mesmerent"), another world overrun by plants, and finally a city where Chesterton, framed for murder, is considered guilty until proven innocent--by the doctor, of course. As is characteristic of this series, the special effects are a hokey hoot and the actors sometimes step on each others' lines. Hartnell vacationed during production and is absent for two episodes. But this is a surprisingly prophetic cautionary tale: it may be good to heed the doctor's prescient observation that "man was not made to be controlled by machines." If you have yet to make an appointment with the doctor, perhaps the episodes featuring Tom Baker--the fourth and most popular of the doctors--are a more accessible introduction. --Donald Liebenson
