Lowest new price: $17.94
Lowest used price: $9.95
List price: $19.97
Brand: Warner Manufacturing
This two-disc set celebrates the rich history of the Pittsburgh Steelers, from the inception through their incredible run in 2004. Bonus program is the NFL Films production of Super Bowl XIII, the 35-31 thriller in which the Steelers topped the Cowboys. Includes tons of bonus features on the greatest Steeler moments, games and players.
The Complete History of the Pittsburgh Steelers is NFL Films' amazing 142-minute overview of one of the NFL's most storied and successful franchises. It begins with the team's humble start as the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1933, its first star, Byron "Whizzer" White (who soon gave up football glory for school and an eventual seat on the U.S. Supreme Court), and a by-necessity wartime merger with Pennsylvania's other team to form the Phil-Pitt Steagles. Subsequent years brought their move to the fledgling AFC, the hiring of coach Chuck Noll, and an influx of better players such as Joe Green, Terry Bradshaw (when he had hair!), Lynn Swann, and Jack Lambert. That led in turn to Franco Harris's "Immaculate Reception" and four Super Bowl championships in a span of six years. But the history doesn't end there. Also covered are players such as Rod Woodson, Kordell "Slash" Stewart, Hines Ward, and Ben Roethlisberger, the passing of owner Art Rooney, a new coach in square-jawed native son Bill Cowher, the disappointment of Super Bowl XXX, the infamous coin-flip fiasco, the demolition of Three Rivers Stadium, and the team's relationship with its community, up to and including the team's 2004 season.
If that's not enough, the two-DVD set also adds three and a half hours of bonus features. There's the 48-minute "NFL's Greatest Games" installment about Super Bowl XIII, 40-minute featurettes on Cowher, Jerome Betttis, and Bradshaw, and shorter pieces on Harris's Italian fan club, Rocky Bleier, broadcaster Myron Cope, longtime running back and coach Dick Hoak, and the first player mic'd for sound, linebacker Bill Saul. Obviously The Complete History of the Pittsburgh Steelers is a must-own for Steeltown fans, but it should also appeal to almost anyone interested in football history. --David Horiuchi

The Emmy® award-winning documentary THE WAR explores the history and horror of World War II from an American perspective by following so-called ordinary men and women who became caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in history. This epic film focuses on the stories of citizens from four American towns taking the viewer through their personal and harrowing journeys, painting vivid portraits of how the war altered their lives.
Creating epic documentaries about war is nothing new for Ken Burns, nor is the subject of the Second World War, which never ceases to be a popular subject of films and TV shows. Yet with The War, Burns has definitely succeeded in breaking new ground, exploring in depth the effect of the war on common Americans, and not just the soldiers of The Greatest Generation that fought it. As the narration says at the beginning, "The war affected people in every house, on every street in every town in America." This is nothing less than an attempt to show how the war altered the lives of an entire nation through the portrayal of four individuals from four communities--Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alambama; Luverne, Minnesota; and Sacramento, California--that could represent any town in the country that went through the war. The result is another stunning achievement for Burns and co-director Lynn Novick. Together the filmmaking team succeeds in bringing the war home through the testimonies, letters, and footage of the people from these towns. The storytelling is compelling--Burns and Novick manage to find the most vivid, intimate, and personal dimensions of a global catastrophe--and brought to life with exceptional voice work from marquee stars like Tom Hanks, Alan Arkin, and Samuel L. Jackson. Much of the footage is brilliantly restored; even the most die-hard History Channel buff will see clips here that they've never viewed before. Many old grainy family films look almost as clean and bright as if they were just shot using a modern camera with black-and-white film (keeping in mind that most of the footage was shot without sound, the audio effects work on The War is particularly impressive and should bring attention to the underappreciated work of the foley artist). It took Burns and Novick six years to make this seven-part, 15-hour film--not surprising, really, considering the miles of footage they must have accumulated in the course of their research--and the time and effort shows in the results. The DVD also includes a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, extensive commentaries, and more, in addition to a companion book, The War: An Intimate History. --Daniel Vancini

A boatload of beloved VeggieTales pals embarks on a fun and fresh pirate adventure with their trademark humor and silly songs in The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything – A VeggieTales Movie! Larry the Cucumber, Mr. Lunt and Pa Grape find themselves on the ride of their lives when they are mysteriously whisked back to the time when pirates ruled the high seas. As they help a brave princess rescue her brother from a dastardly pirate villain, they battle evil Cheese Curls, giant rock monsters and their own fears and become the most unlikely heroes you’ve ever seen. It’s a swashbuckling good time for the whole family!
Being a hero is a lot to live up to and for Elliot (Larry the Cucumber), Sedgewick (Mr. Lunt), and George (Pa Grape), working as cabin boys in the local dinner theater's pirate show looks like it may be as close to heroic as any of them ever get. Back in the 17th century, heir to the throne Prince Alexander has been captured by his evil uncle Robert and his sister Princess Eloise is determined to rescue him. A magical ball bequeathed by Eloise's father magically transports Elliot, Sedgewick, and George back in time via rowboat in answer to the Princess's request for heroes, but their timidity, laziness, and lack of self confidence looks like it will prevent the trio from fulfilling their heroic mission. As the three friends struggle with their own shortcomings, they eventually discover that being heroic may be as simple as just doing what is right. Still, can they possibly live up to the expectations of the Princess and fulfill their apparent heroic destiny? This is a captivating pirate movie full of adventure, cute characters, funny moments, and catchy music that imparts a wholesome message without being either preachy or overtly religious. Best of all, this swashbuckling film won't scare even the most sensitive young viewer. (Ages 2 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

ABOUT THE MOVIE: The new "extended edition" of this ground-breaking feature length movie presentation reveals The Great Secret of the universe. It has been passed throughout the ages, traveling through centuries... to reach you.
This is The Secret to everything - the secret to unlimited joy, health, money, relationships, love, youth: everything you have ever wanted.
In this astonishing program are ALL the resources you will ever need to understand and live The Secret. For the first time in history, the world's leading scientists, authors, and philosophers will reveal The Secret that utterly transformed the lives of every person who ever knew it... Plato, Newton, Carnegie, Beethoven, Shakespeare, Einstein.
Now YOU will know The Secret.
And it can change your life forever.
Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it’s The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).
Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won’t resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini

What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure.
Two out of every three of us are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially amongst our younger population. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country's three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to "battle" these very conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases.
Could it be there's a single solution to all of these problems? A solution so comprehensive but so utterly straightforward, that it's mind-boggling that more of us haven't taken it seriously?
FORKS OVER KNIVES
examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called "diseases of affluence" that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering yet under-appreciated researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn.
Dr. Campbell, a nutritional scientist at Cornell University, was concerned in the late 1960's with producing "high quality" animal protein to bring to the poor and malnourished areas of the third world. While in the Philippines, he made a life-changing discovery: the country's wealthier children, who were consuming relatively high amounts of animal-based foods, were much more likely to get liver cancer. Dr. Esselstyn, a top surgeon and head of the Breast Cancer Task Force at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, found that many of the diseases he routinely treated were virtually unknown in parts of the world where animal-based foods were rarely consumed.
These discoveries inspired Campbell and Esselstyn, who didn't know each other yet, to conduct several groundbreaking studies. One of them took place in China and is still among the most comprehensive health-related investigations ever undertaken. Their research led them to a startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented - and in many cases reversed - by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. Despite the profound implications of their findings, their work has remained relatively unknown to the public. The filmmakers travel with Drs. Campbell and Esselstyn on their separate but similar paths, from their childhood farms where they both produced "nature's perfect food"; to China and Cleveland, where they explored ideas that challenged the established thinking and shook their own core beliefs.
The idea of food as medicine is put to the test. Throughout the film, cameras follow "reality patients" who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes. Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments - while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed.
FORKS OVER KNIVES utilizes state of the art 3-D graphics and rare archival footage. The film features leading experts on health, examines the question "why we don't know", and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that will have people talking for years.
FORKS OVER KNIVES was filmed all over the U.S., in Canada and China.
