The Korean feature Hammerboy (2003) was adapted from a popular manhwa (graphic novel) by Youngman Hur. In 2112, Mangchi, a pint-sized hero who's more enthusiastic than bright, lives in a setting that recalls Waterworld: a small colony on an island formed by two ruined skyscrapers. His grandfather forges the hammers Mangchi loves to play with, and instructs him in the "Great Echo," a way of focusing all the body's energy into a yell that serves as a weapon. When Princess Poplar crash lands near the colony, Mangchi has to help her against the power-hungry minister Moonk, who's trying to seize the throne.

The filmmakers cram far too much story into 75 minutes, leaving the characters underdeveloped and big chunks of the plot unresolved and unexplained. Like other recent Korean features, Hammerboy borrows heavily from Japanese animation, especially the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Director Taekun An lifts elements from Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, and Kiki's Delivery Service, but it's all pastiche. Hammerboy is no deeper than an episode of Digimon. (Rated 13 and older, but suitable for ages 9 and older: minor toilet humor, cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Doggy Poo

In Doggy Poo, a little doggy poo feels all alone in the world. He believes that nobody needs him for anything, and that he has no purpose in life. If only Poo had a good friend! Then he wouldn't give up on his dream to be someone important. One day, Poo meets a lovely dandelion sprout. Will she help him make his dream come true? Special Features: The Making of Doggy Poo (Korean Documentary), Alternate Angle Color Storyboards for Entire Program, Original Korean Doggy Poo Trailer, U.S. Doggy Poo Trailer, Music Video, Photo Gallery, Set Gallery, Behind the Scenes Gallery, and Previews. Spoken Languages: English, Korean, English Subtitles.

A little dog leaves the title character by the side of a road, wondering why its exists. Over the course of several months, Poo meets a leaf, a hen, and a lump of soil, who assures it, "God has not created you for no reason." But little Poo feels rejected until a dandelion sprout accepts it as fertilizer. The message that even the humblest have a place in creation is a worthy one, but Doggy Poo is a long way from Dr. Seuss's "A person's a person, no matter how small." The stop-motion Poo character whines constantly, and the story unfolds at a leaden pace. Parents who find Doggy Poo acceptable viewing for young children--clearly the intended audience--may have to steer their kids away from the genuine article. (Rated: G, all ages; parents may find images of excrement inappropriate for children's entertainment) --Charles Solomon

A U.S. marshal guards a hit man slated to testify against a mobster.

The most kaleidoscopic crime thriller you'll ever see. Nowhere to Hide is about a team of cops tracking down a murderous drug lord--but the plot is the only ordinary thing about the movie. Nowhere to Hide uses just about every visual trick imaginable: slow motion, rapid-fire editing, different film textures (from gritty black and white to luminous color), freeze-frames, as well as techniques that have only become possible with computers and that are impossible to describe. But the movie has more than visual razzle-dazzle: scenes go off in bizarre directions, the tone shifts radically from hyperviolence to total sentimentality (in one scene, the loose-cannon detective is brutally beating a handcuffed prisoner; moments later, he's as happy as a little boy when his sister gives him a pair of gloves), the characters are outrageously melodramatic. The soundtrack shares this amazing cinematic schizophrenia, featuring light pop songs, shrieking heavy metal, moody Spanish guitar, and soaring classical. The overall effect is dizzying, disorienting, but at the same time giddy and exciting. The closest American equivalent is Charlie's Angels; these are movies that have moved beyond story logic and character development into sheer sensory enjoyment; movies that push action-movie techniques to the point of becoming almost avant-garde, some insane hybrid of John Woo and Jean-Luc Godard. Not to be missed. --Bret Fetzer
