4 Head Video Cassette Recorder Stereo VHS Player.

The Sony SLV-N51 four-head hi-fi VCR satisfies your recording and playback needs, offering such features as commercial skip, which automatically advances the tape 30 seconds when activated; flash rewind, which offers a complete rewind of a T-120 tape in a mere 60 seconds; and instant replay, which skips back a few seconds to replay a compelling scene or bit of dialogue. The device also employs a plug-and-play setup, so users can be up and running in mere moments (the channels and clock tune automatically). Video performance is enhanced by the dual azimuth four-head recording and playback, which enables two speeds for SP mode and two speeds for EP mode. The slower EP mode is nearly as sharp as the SP mode due to the 19-micron heads, which reduce distortion and deliver a clear, digital-like picture.

Users will appreciate the convenient multilingual onscreen display; the crystal-clear freeze frame, frame advance, and search modes; and the index scan, which helps locate a specific program on a tape without fuss. As opposed to VCR's with manual tracking, the SLV-N51 includes sophisticated digital auto tracking adjustment that smoothes playback. The VCR also employs an eight-event timer, auto head cleaning, a parental lock feature, and front AV inputs for connecting to a camcorder or game system. In addition, the SLV-N51 is Energy Star compliant.

Features Easy Set Up Feature: This feature guides you through first time set up; to activate the easy set up feature, all you need to do is press a single button on the front of the VCR. 19 Micron Video Heads: For better picture quality from EP tapes. APC Adaptive Picture Control: This feature tests each tape and adjusts both playback and record parameters for best picture. Reality Regenerator Function: This may be turned on or off. This function operates automatically when turned on to "restore" the picture to its original quality during playback. This enhancement sharpens the edges of an image while minimizing video noise unlike a regular sharpness control does. Note that this is a fairly subtle enhancement and how noticeable it is depends on the quality of the tape you are watching. This function works with all VHS tapes, even if they were not recorded on a unit with this function. VCR Plus+ Gold, VCR+ with channel setup, and Smart Channel Mapping: This VCR can automatically set the guide channels in your area by entering your Zip/Postal Code during Easy Setup. This keeps you from having to manually map which station corresponds to VCR+ codes in your area. If no station is broadcasting the required signal in your area you can also set it manually. Note that if you have various cable systems in your area, the VCR will ask you to select which one you use. Station ID: You can select a TV program using the station's ID. Favorite Channel: A list of 10 channels can be cataloged as Favorite Channels. You create your favorite channel list using the Station IDs. Advanced Quickset Timer Dial with Station ID: The rotary dial on the VCR allows you to easily program recordings within the next month without having to turn on the television. Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi Stereo VCR, 19 Micron Head/Auto Clock Set/Auto Head Cleaner in perfect working condition with a working Sony TV/VCR Remote Control.

Don't miss a minute of your favorite shows or tapes. Sony's SLV-N71 is packed with convenience features designed to simplify recording and viewing, from one-month, eight-event advance programming to Commercial Pass. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the SLV-N71's front panel for hassle-free connections.

This model's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. If you route the stereo output to an AV receiver, you can even enjoy four-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic mixes from TV and Dolby-encoded cassettes. The SLV-N71's dual-azimuth construction uses two pairs of recording heads rather than one, each optimized for a specific mode (one for SP recording, the other for EP), while 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode.

For setup, a single button calls up an onscreen menu to guide you through VCR setup, including parameters for features like menu language select, satellite receiver or cable-box control setup, and auto tuner presets. The VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal at the point where each recording begins so you can easily scan back to the start of a recording using these signals as a reference.

The VCR's advanced Quick-set timer dial makes it easy to program the timer up to one month in advance. Press the dial once to activate the timer, then turn the knob to set it. You can adjust start and stop times in one minute increments. VCR Plus+ further simplifies programming, as it lets you set the VCR to record programs based on common PlusCode numbers found in the TV listings of over 600 newspapers and TV Guide--no more worrying about start and end times for your most frequently recorded shows.

Commercial Pass makes it easier than ever to zip past commercials and unwanted "coming attractions." Press the button once to go into high-speed picture search; press it again and the VCR stops, rewinds a few seconds so you won't miss any of your movie, then plays. Adaptive Picture Control (APC) tests each tape and adjusts recording parameters for the best performance and adjusts playback for an ideal balance between picture sharpness and low video noise.

ChildLoc circuitry keeps small hands from going where only tapes belong. With the handy one-hour timer back-up, the VCR saves timer data for up to one hour in the event of a power loss. The unit comes with a multi-brand TV/VCR remote control.

Panasonic PV-V4021 4-Head VCR (1999 Model) Lowest used price: $71.18
List price: $89.99
Model: OUTLET-PV-V4021

Why bother with lesser-known brands when you can get a fine VHS VCR by Panasonic? The Panasonic PV-V4021 is an excellent performer loaded with features that make it fun and easy to use. This 4-head VHS Video Cassette Recorder offers brilliant color and excellent picture quality. The video system produces a clear and stable picture during still/pause, slow motion, and forward/reverse search. Front A/V Input Jacks allow you to conveniently connect outboard video sources to the TV, without the hassles of rear-mounted inputs. It's great for connecting camcorders for viewing tapes, or connecting video game consoles. Commercial Advance can automatically skip over three minutes of commercials on most programs recorded from broadcast networks. Auto Clock Set with 24-hour Back-up automatically sets the current time and date and updates the clock in the event of a power failure. Tape Position Display identifies your current position on a tape with an indication of remaining tape length. Multi-Function Clock Display prominently displays the time and various VCR functions. Trilingual On-Screen Display is provided for on-screen programming instructions in English, Spanish or French. Index Search allows for simplified access to various programs on a tape. Program End Search lets you find the end of a recorded program. Multi-Brand Universal Light Tower Illuminated Remote is included for convenient operation.

With its great picture quality, quick setup, front audio-video inputs, and fantastic price, the Panasonic PV-V4021 VCR is a nice little unit that most people will find not only suits their video viewing and recording needs, but does so with very little fuss. As this piece is definitely not intended for videophiles, we tested the PV-V4021 using an inexpensive TV with mono sound and a coaxial video hookup.

We had the unit set up and ready to go in about four minutes. A thin but functional coaxial cable and batteries for the adequate remote control are included, and we were up and running without having to consult the well-written instruction manual.

With four heads working on its behalf, the PV-V4021 delivers a crisp, clear picture from the moment you hit Play. The remote's key buttons--Play, Rewind, Fast Forward, and Stop--are intuitively placed in a diamond pattern and are larger than the other buttons for easy access. However, the Eject key is hidden in the grid of other control buttons, and without a backlight it was easier to get out of the chair and eject tapes by hand than grope around for the button. Additionally, we were unable to set the remote so it would control our TV's volume, despite claims of compatibility and clear instructions in the manual.

We tested the unit's record function by plugging a camcorder's output into the convenient AV inputs on the unit's front panel. Before recording, you must select the appropriate input (front or back) using the remote control. The resulting second-generation tape turned out quite well, easily comparable to the quality of tapes from units costing twice the price of the PV-V4021.

A final thing to consider is the unit's build quality. While we had no disasters, the rewind function elicited a terrible straining sound and slowed to a crawl almost immediately, and the rear panel that houses the AV jacks was flimsy enough to cause some concern when we were connecting and disconnecting our cables.

At the end of the day, however, the Panasonic PV-V4021 really is a nice VCR for casual movie viewing and program recording. Despite our reservations, its good qualities and price tag address the concerns of its potential audience quite well. --Erik Hammen

VHS HiFi Stereo VCR, multi-brand universla light tower remote control for TV, cablebox, VCR and DSS, auto clock set, trilingual on-screen display, channel caption to id 34 channels w/station ID, program index search, tape position display, time stamp

The Panasonic PV-9450 is not cluttered with features that you'll probably never use anyway, but it does offer those that are important: 4-head video quality, stereo hi-fi sound, and on-screen programming. The unit also includes Panasonic's Multi-Brand Universal Light Tower Remote, which works with most TVs and cable boxes.

The PV-9450 impressed us with its simplicity; we took it out of the box, connected an antenna and TV, and plugged it in. We then followed the initial on-screen setup instructions and, by itself, the unit found the active broadcast channels and even set its clock. We played a prerecorded tape and found the picture to be crisp and sharp. The PV-9450's audio was rich and full, characteristic of hi-fi stereo.

Another interesting feature of the PV-9450 is a time stamp, which, at the beginning of a videotape, displays the time and date of your recording and the channel from which it was recorded. A tape-position display shows how close you are to the beginning or end of a tape.

The remote control, unlike the VCR, is a bit bulky, and its many buttons get in the way of the few you'll use most of the time. Of course, it is a universal remote, and, as such, must sacrifice some design elegance.

If the most important features to you are 4-head picture quality and hi-fi stereo sound, then Panasonic PV-9450 is a sensible choice.

Pros:

  • Universal remote works with most TVs and cable boxes
  • 4 heads for a clear picture
  • Hi-fi stereo for great sound

Cons:

  • Limited feature set

Features:

  • VHS hi-fi stereo
  • MTS/SAP broadcast reception
  • Multibrand universal remote
  • Auto clock set with backup, trilingual on-screen programming and setup
  • Limit 2 per customer
