By the time she left Atlantic Records in 1963, Ruth Brown could look back on 24 R&B hits dating back to her first, "So Long," in 1949. Raised in the church, her chops honed in Lucky Millinder's Big Band, she could deliver technique and attitude to burn, breaking hearts with smoky ballads and raising the roof with brash jump-blues numbers. Over the years her reedy, delicate voice evolved into a deep, full-bodied instrument, more expressive in its varied colors than it was early on, and she used it to devastating effect, especially on her double-entendre workouts ("Wild Wild Young Men"). The 40 tracks on this 2 CD set chart all the early, towering entries, as well as some interesting non-hits (among these a scintillating foray into gospel-based pop, "I Can See Everybody's Baby") and three previously unreleased cuts. In recent years Brown has delivered exemplary work on the Fantasy and Bullseye Blues labels, but Miss Rhythm is the rock the legend is built on. --David McGee

Produced with the blessing of his estate, this disc is a thorough survey of his timeless genius--all recorded on the Capitol label. It captures his sumptuous and soothing tenor voice crooning on the pop tunes he made famous, like the ethereal "Nature Boy," the melancholy "Mona Lisa," and the bouncy "Straighten Up and Fly Right," and "Route 66." It also features Cole's often-overlooked skills as an Earl Hines-style pianist. "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps)," and "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup," attest to his international appeal, and see if you can keep a dry eye when you listen to Natalie Cole's posthumous, digitally-enhanced duet with her father on "Unforgettable." From strings to big bands, Nat King Cole is never out of style. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Take the Gamble, the new release by Dave Gross is anything but a gamble as it loudly affirms that 21 year-old Dave may be the most versatile performer of roots music to arrive on the scene in quite some time. Under the eye of producer, Duke Robillard, Dave nimbly glides from decade to decade, revealing his impressive command of the many styles of blues and swing. Dave demonstrates that his phrasing and virtuoso chops are the equal of just about any guitar hero. Dave also shows that he is a skilled songwriter whose poignant lyrics and stylish melodies seem to be written by someone far older; credited for 9 out of the 14 songs on this record. His vocals range from bluesy, down and dirty to almost crooner-like.
The CD kicks off with “Gatemouth” Brown’s foot-stomping classic “She Walks Right In” flowing right into his own tune with New Orleans roots, “Mess On My Plate” – both with a killer horn section. The album is laced with strong originals complimented by 4 carefully chosen covers. Dave and the Duke fire licks back and forth on “I’m Leavin’ Baby,” while Duke plays beautiful rhythm guitar on the swing classic, “After You’ve Gone.” Throughout the record, Dave pays tribute to his heroes; T-Bone Walker (“I Know Your Wig Is Gone”, “I’m So Hungry Blues”), Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt (“Swingin’ On All Six”, “After You’ve Gone”), among a stew of influences that never seem to overshadow Dave’s own unique voice. He brilliantly weaves from style to style while never compromising who “Dave Gross” is.
Dave is backed by an all-star cast including Duke Robillard, Doug James (baritone/tenor sax), Dennis Gruenling (harmonica), Al Basile (cornet), Arthur Neilson (Upright bass, guitar), AJ Hager (Fender bass), Doña Oxford (piano/organ) and Mark Teixeira and Matt Mousseau (drums).

Smith,Keely ~ Swing Swing Swing
The mid-'90s lounge music revival has come and gone, the music of Louis Prima has been used to sell khaki pants, but--strangely enough--vocalist and Prima ex-wife Keely Smith has remained relatively quiet. Until now. With the appropriately titled Swing, Swing, Swing, Smith proves she still has the perfect timing, pitch, and vocals that she had on those classic collaborations with Prima. Also, the late trumpeter-bandleader's spirit seems to permeate this infectious disc. Smith starts with a lively medley of "When You're Smiling" and "The Sheik of Araby," does Prima favorites "Jump, Jive, An' Wail" and "Robin Hood," and includes plenty of unique numbers she can call her own (just check out "Keely's Boogie"). "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," "Yata Hei," and the album's title track are some highlights--upbeat numbers where the 17-piece Frankie Capp Orchestra provide all the jazzy energy of Smith's old bandleader, Billy May. There are a few disappointing tunes--"Let the Good Times Roll," a studio performance meant to sound like a live lounge recording--and "Palm Springs Jump," but this is still a great comeback. --Jason Verlinde
