|The Greatest Christmas Novelty CD of All Time
Lowest new price: $11.95
Lowest used price: $6.91
Yikes! Includes Jingle Bells Singing Dogs; Nuttin' for Christmas Stan Freberg; Christmas at Ground Zero Weird Al Yankovic; A Christmas Carol Tom Lehrer; I'm a Christmas Tree Wild Man Fisher with Dr. Demento, and more.
The title might be immodest, but it's accurate. Just about every holiday song parody and comedy sketch you can imagine is jimmied onto this hilarious, sprawling collection. While you'll find a smattering of well-known Christmas wackiness (including "Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer" and the Singing Dogs' "Jingle Bells"), the Doctor's specialty is unearthing the obscure, such as Wild Man Fischer's weirder-than-weird "I Am a Christmas Tree." You'll never listen to "The 12 Days of Christmas" quite the same way after hearing the spins put on the tale by both Allan Sherman and Bob and Doug McKenzie, and you're likely to check your Christmas cookie for "special ingredients" after hearing Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and His Old Lady." --David Sprague
|An American Prayer - Jim Morrison
Lowest new price: $5.41
Lowest used price: $3.46
Certified Platinum by the RIAA. (11/01)
The Doors recorded six studio albums with Jim Morrison as their singer from 1967 to 1971, hitting the charts with a series of pop songs that were at least as good as Tommy James and the Shondells. On their albums, they indulged in Morrison's pretentious obsessions that included extended pieces about Oedipal complexes and the end of the world. Those obsessions have been exaggerated by The Doors myth that continues to this day. This is a collection of Morrison's poetry, embellished by the surviving Doors several years after the fact. That the live rendition of "Roadhouse Blues" is the only noteworthy selection should tell you what you need to know about the poetry. --Rob O'Connor
