Three different police chiefs in three different eras become involved in a growing mystery -- who is the mass murderer behind the killing of transient youths in and around the fictional southern town of Delano over a forty year period? In this three-part, six-hour miniseries, Charlton Heston, in his return to TV acting after fourteen years (his career in television goes back to 1949), is one of the town's founding fathers and he has stayed on as a powerbroker as, successively, cotton farmer Wayne Rogers, racist Brad Davis, and college educated Billy Dee Williams become police chiefs over the years in this adaptation of Stuart Woods' novel. Keith Carradine replaced an ailing Andy Griffith as Foxy Funderburke, a disgruntled local harboring a forty year grudge, and received an Emmy Award nomination as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series. The production itself was nominated as Outstanding Limited Series and for art direction and set decoration.

Missionaries travel to the Brazilian rain forest and make a mess of everything. What else is new? Actually, plenty in this dark but beautifully realized adaptation of Peter Matthiessen's well-regarded novel, directed by Hector Babenco. Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kathy Bates, and John Lithgow play the Americans who travel to the Brazilian interior in an effort to do some good. But their definitions of good vary wildly; Bates and Lithgow are old-fashioned puritans who want to convert the heathens to Christianity and remove all traces of their own culture. Quinn and Hannah are more spiritually minded, hoping to make a connection and a cultural exchange with the Indians they encounter. In the end, they're all delusional, trapped in their own preconceptions. Downbeat but magical in its way, with sterling performances all around and amazing scenery, to say the least. --Marshall Fine

The popular topic of men whose mid-life crises grow with a thickening waistline is handled with snatches of wit and insight in this standard comedy-drama from John Trent. Bobby Lee (Bruce Dern) is beginning to feel hemmed in -- his wife (Ann-Margret) has lost some of her appeal and his friends and family keep viewing him like the forty-year-old he will soon be. After his father dies, he is unable to take it anymore, and he hooks up with a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader (Deborah Wakeham) on a trip to that city. He may have traded in his business suite for denim, jeans, and cowboy boots, but he soon finds that a real transformation is not so easy.

O Pioneers! tells the story of the Bergsons, a family of Swedish immigrants in the farm country near the fictional town of Hanover, Nebraska, at the turn of the 20th century. The main character, Alexandra Bergson, inherits the family farmland when her father dies and devotes her life to making the farm a viable enterprise at a time when many other immigrant families are giving up and leaving the prairie. The novel is also concerned with two romantic relationships, one between Alexandra and family friend Carl Linstrum and the other between Alexandra's brother Emil and the married Marie Shabata.

Cecil B. De Mille was inspired to make this 1944 movie after hearing of the heroic efforts of Navy doctor Corydon M. Wassell in one of Franklin Roosevelt's fireside chats. When the Japanese were sweeping throughout the East Indies, Dr. Wassell (Gary Cooper) refuses to abandon wounded sailors from the cruiser Marblehead who were left behind in Java when the Americans evacuated. Against great odds, Wassell succeeds in getting all of the men to Australia alive. Certainly an inspiring story, but obviously in the hands of the wrong director as De Mille throws in melodramatic romance, dancing girls and pretty much every World War II cliche known. "The Story of Dr. Wassell" has an immense cast and a surprisingly slow pace which all serves to detract from Gary Cooper's grim resolve to lead the men to safety. Wassel's claim this film was "98 per cent documentary" is just not credible. I found myself thinking this film would have worked a lot better in black and white, which would have been more appropriate to the grim but fascinating story at the heart of the movie. Final note of interested: this film was released on D-Day.Free upgrade to first class mail.
