Jason Goes to Hell [VHS]

Jason Goes to Hell [VHS] Lowest used price: $13.99

Blow mad killer Jason Voorhees to smithereens in the opening sequence of the movie? Sorry, folks, you have to do better than that. Jason's evil spirit finds its way into a series of host bodies, thus continuing the carnage at Crystal Lake, in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. Naturally, part 9 is not the final Friday the 13th movie (no big deal: part 4, you'll recall, was titled The Final Chapter). Jason confronts a long-lost sister at the lake, while the usual assortment of naked teens are dispatched. This one tries to vary the formula a bit but ends up with a story line every bit as nonsensical as those that came before. The final sequence tries to put Jason away for keeps and calls upon the demons of hell for support. The last shot is an outrageous joke, which is perhaps what this franchise deserves. --Robert Horton

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer [VHS]

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer [VHS] Lowest new price: $3.25
Lowest used price: $1.25
List price: $3.25

There was so much story left to tell after I Know What You Did Last Summer that the filmmakers brought back all the beloved, surviving characters from the first film for this sequel. Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), and Julie's white tank top (Jennifer Love Hewitt's white tank top) return to once again face a hook-wielding maniac. Not satisfied merely to repeat a theme, director Danny Cannon and screenwriter Trey Callaway add variation by introducing Karla (Brandy) as Julie's best friend in the whole wide world. Karla and Julie have won a summer trip to the Bahamas with their current infatuations but find that they've arrived at the start of the storm season and that at their hotel "Do Not Disturb" signs should flip to say "R.I.P." One can only hope to hang just such a sign on this repetitive, tedious franchise, especially since this version is less scary than the price of beer in those little hotel room refrigerators. Definite contender for Gratuitous T&A Shot of the Year (it's of Hewitt and that's not meant as a recommendation). --Keith Simanton

Lord of Flies [VHS]

Lord of Flies [VHS] Lowest new price: $9.54
Lowest used price: $3.25

The brilliant theater director Peter Brook brings William Golding's macabre novel to the screen in the original film adaptation of Lord of the Flies. Stranded on a remote and desolate island, a group of British schoolboys try to organize themselves into a law-abiding society: "After all, we're not savages--we're English," one of them proclaims. Civilization is quickly forgotten as the band of boys descend into savagery and anarchy. Brute force and blind authority become the standards of behavior in this brilliantly sardonic tale of lost innocence. Digital transfer supervised by cinematographer Gerald Fell and approved by Peter Brook.

In this classic 1963 adaptation of William Golding's novel, a planeload of schoolboys is stranded on a tropical island. They've got food and water; all that's left is to peacefully govern themselves until they're rescued. "After all," says choir leader Jack, "We're English. We're the best in the world at everything!" Unfortunately, living peacefully is not as easy as it seems. Though Ralph is named chief, Jack and the choristers quickly form a clique of their own, using the ever-effective political promise of fun rather than responsibility to draw converts. Director Peter Brook draws some excellent performances out of his young cast; the moment when Ralph realizes that even if he blows the conch for a meeting people might not come is an excruciating one. Well acted and faithfully executed, Lord of the Flies is as compelling today as when first released. --Ali Davis

Bonnie & Clyde [VHS]

Bonnie & Clyde [VHS] Lowest new price: $5.31
Lowest used price: $2.99
List price: $11.77

One of the landmark films of the 1960s, Bonnie and Clyde changed the course of American cinema. Setting a milestone for screen violence that paved the way for Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch, this exercise in mythologized biography should not be labeled as a bloodbath; as critic Pauline Kael wrote in her rave review, "it's the absence of sadism that throws the audience off balance." The film is more of a poetic ode to the Great Depression, starring the dream team of Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the titular antiheroes, who barrel across the South and Midwest robbing banks with Clyde's brother Buck (Gene Hackman), Buck's frantic wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons), and their faithful accomplice C.W. Moss (the inimitable Michael J. Pollard). Bonnie and Clyde is an unforgettable classic that has lost none of its power since the 1967 release. --Jeff Shannon

What looks like a standard 1980s holiday-themed slasher movie turns out to be a much more witty venture. A group of college students head out for a weekend of relaxation and April Fools' pranks at an isolated island cottage, catching the very last ferry until Monday morning. A practical joke goes awry, hostess Muffy starts tromping around in frumpy clothes and acting like she's not quite herself, and the bodies start piling up. Don't you just hate it when you're on a completely remote island and the phone goes out? All of this is done, though, with a fairly low gore content and a sly wink at the usual slasher conventions--rather than whodunit, the trick is to figure out what's in good fun and what's real bloodletting. It ain't Citizen Kane, but it's not a bad evening's enjoyment either. --Ali Davis
